Understanding Hatcher's layout

Hatcher Library is made up of two connected buildings, Hatcher North and Hatcher South.

  • If you enter Hatcher Library off the Diag, you’re in Hatcher North.
  • If you enter Hatcher Library off South University Avenue (behind the Clements Library), you’re in Hatcher South.
You can cross between Hatcher North and Hatcher South on floor 2 and access book stacks for both buildings on floor 4. The other floors are not directly connected. It’s helpful to plan ahead if you’re unfamiliar.

To find your way in Hatcher, take note of whether the location you're looking for says "north" or "south" in its address. View our floor plans for more room information.

North entrance and floors

The Hatcher North entrance is located off the Diag by going up the central stairs or a ramp on either side of the building. The east (left) ramp meets Americans with Disabilities Act standards for steepness and surface condition, but the west ramp does not. There is an automatic door at the entrance. The lobby has an information services desk on the right as you enter.

The building has full floors and half (A) floors, with most book stacks on the A floors. Elevators in the north lobby only go to the full floors (basement and 1–4). The east elevators reach all floors and are accessible through the stacks.

The entrance to the book stacks from the lobby requires the use of stairs or a steep ramp through the Hatcher Gallery. For access to the stacks and east elevators without stairs or the ramp:

  1. Take a lobby elevator to floor 2.

  2. Go to the center of the floor and enter through the door labeled "North Stacks" just past Hatcher 206.

  3. Once in the stacks, you can follow the yellow tape on the floor to the east elevator lobby to reach other floors.

Routes that do not require stairs or a steep ramp include narrow passageways through the stacks and sets of doors that do not open automatically. Please ask staff at the desk if you need help navigating the building or retrieving items.

South entrance and floors

The Hatcher South entrance is located off South University Avenue, behind the Clements Library. This entrance is wheelchair-accessible, with an automatic door and no steps or incline.

The lobby has an information services desk and elevators that go to floors 1 through 8 of Hatcher South. The third elevator also goes to the A floors of the Hatcher North stacks.

Restrooms

Hatcher North:

  • Men's restrooms in the basement and floor 3 of Hatcher North are wheelchair accessible
  • Women's restrooms on floors 1 and 3 are wheelchair accessible
  • No all-gender restrooms

Hatcher South:

  • Men's and women's restrooms on floors 2 through 8
  • Single-stall, all-gender, and accessible restrooms on floors 3, 4, 5, and 6
