Request Accessibility Remediation Support for Library Materials

If you have a disability that prevents you from using library materials, we will work to remediate materials in a way that meets your needs. This includes access to electronic scans of any items in HathiTrust through the Accessibility Text Request Service. Please note that this service is not designed for faculty to remediate their course content, except in cases involving a student with a qualifying disability.

Eligibility

To use these remediation services, you must be a member of the U-M community and certified by a competent authority as needing accommodations from the library for materials. For instance, if you are unable to read or use printed library materials, we could work with you on obtaining accessible electronic copies, though this is not the full extent of remediation services that the library could provide.

Who determines eligibility?

At the University of Michigan, the following two offices are the best starting point if you have a disability and would benefit from these and/or other accommodations.

These offices maintain confidentiality and work with other competent authorities such as doctors, nurses, and therapists.

Get Started

If you know the library materials you need remediated, please submit an accessible copy request (U-M authentication required). You will receive an automated response after your submission, but someone from the library accessibility team will contact you within 2 business days if we require further information.

We strive to provide accessible copies within 1-2 weeks. Some requests may take longer depending on the scope, scale, and complexity of the materials. We’ll communicate with you if we anticipate needing additional time to complete your request.

If you have questions about this service, please email access-copy-lib@umich.edu. If you want to consult with a member of the library accessibility team to learn how to make content that doesn’t fall within this service more accessible, including course materials, please request a consultation.

Support for non-library materials

Other campus offices support accommodation needs for materials not available through the library. Students: contact Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). Faculty and staff: contact the Disability Equity Office (DEO).
