Experiment with hand set type and book making supplies in our Book Arts Studio, which includes more than 175 drawers of metal and wooden type and a few hundred pictorial ornaments.

How to access 

Access is mostly by appointment. We also offer visits and workshops for classes. Please contact us at bookartsstudio@umich.edu for more information.

Open studio time — designed for both beginners and experienced users — is available during the fall and winter semesters on Fridays from 11am-4pm. We also often offer an evening studio time that varies between semesters. 

Extended access may be available to users who have significant experience.

Can’t make it to the Book Arts Studio? The Design Lab Workshop on Central Campus also contains a letterpress, typewriter, and other creative materials.
