Faculty and Staff

All U-M faculty and staff are eligible to borrow our materials.

U-M faculty are also eligible to borrow from member institutions of the Big Ten Academic Alliance. See how to use these privileges.

Appointing a proxy to borrow on your behalf

U-M faculty members with permanent teaching appointments can request that people who work with them obtain proxy privileges to borrow in their name.

The sponsoring faculty member assumes full responsibility for all materials borrowed, including:

  • Notices and correspondence received
  • Return or renewal of books by the due date
  • Immediate return of books that are recalled
  • Payment for any lost materials

Proxy cards are issued for no more than 1 year at a time and must be renewed yearly. Please notify us in writing if a proxy appointment needs to be revoked or canceled before the expiration date.

Retired faculty and staff

Retired faculty and staff from the U-M Ann Arbor campus are eligible for borrowing privileges. This does not include access to online resources or interlibrary loan.

Bring your Mcard to the Hatcher North Information Services desk as proof of your prior faculty or staff status. If you no longer have your Mcard, please bring a state-issued photo ID with your current address.

Borrowing privileges must be renewed yearly.

Emeriti faculty
