Borrow and Return
Reminders, Overdue Items, and Suspended Privileges
To keep you updated on the status of your library account, we send courtesy notices by email about upcoming due dates, materials ready for pick-up, and books recalled by other patrons.
Renewals are automatic for most, but not all, local materials. We do not charge overdue fines, but we do charge the replacement cost for lost items. We may suspend borrowing privileges if items are overdue for too long.
Contact preferences and information
In addition to emails, you can opt-in to text notifications in your library account settings.

If you’re not affiliated with the university, contact circservices@umich.edu to make sure your information with us is current or to request updates.
Overdue items and suspended privileges
Our overdue item limit depends on whether it is from our local collection or another institution, as well as if the item is recalled.
- Suspended borrowing privileges: local item 30 days or more overdue, or recalled item 1 or more days overdue.
- Suspended interlibrary loan privileges: interlibrary loan item 30 days or more overdue, or recalled item 3 or more days overdue.
When you return overdue items, we’ll restore your privileges.
Financial holds on student accounts
Materials that are 90 days or more overdue on student accounts result in a financial hold, which blocks students from registering for classes or receiving transcripts. The hold is released when items are returned or when replacement costs are paid for lost materials.
Contact circservices@umich.edu with any questions, including if your account is suspended and you’re unsure why.
