AAEL Reserves is located at the 2nd Floor Service Desk in the Art, Architecture, & Engineering Library. Here you can find books and materials that have been placed on course reserve at AAEL for the semester, as well as the Permanent Reserves collection.
Electronic readings such as journal articles and book chapters are managed by individual instructor via the course Canvas site. For assistance in saving material into Canvas, you can contact ScholarSpace at the Graduate Library or contact campus Canvas help.
Course reserves is a library service which allows faculty to make books and other physical items available during a semester. The short borrowing periods (a few hours or days) for these items are designed to maximize access for all students in a class.
You can look for the "Library Materials" tab in Canvas. This is a list of books and other physical items on reserve in a library for your class. Or, you can search the reserves section of the Mirlyn Classic catalog by course name or professor name to find out what is on reserve for your class. Canvas or Mirlyn Classic will show the library call number and location of reserve items.
Course instructors may use our online request form or visit the Service Desk on the 2nd floor of the AAEL.
- If the requested edition is not owned by the library you may request that we order it.
- The following information is required:
- course number
- section number (if applicable)
- professor's name
- professor's e-mail address
- Because of space limitations we have a limit of 25 reserve items per course.
- If an edition is not specified in a request, we will use the most recent edition of the book that the U-M Library owns.
- At most we will place one copy of a book on reserve per 50 students.
- Unless requested otherwise, course reserve items can be checked out for 2 hours at a time. However, you may request to have the loan period changed to 4 hours, 1 day, or 3 days.
The Permanent reserve collection is located at the 2nd floor Service Desk. It includes permanent reserve books, IEEE Conference Procedures, CDs, patents and other special items.
Permanent Reserve Books
Permanent reserve items have different loan periods. Some items are restricted to building use only with a maximum of 2 items per check out. If the book is checked out 4 hours prior to closing of the Service Desk, it must be returned before the Service Desk is closed. The materials cannot leave the building and need to be returned directly to the 2nd floor Service Desk.
The Art, Architecture & Engineering Library offers various special items for checkout. Anyone with library borrowing privileges may checkout these items. They are available on a first come, first served basis at the 2nd floor Service Desk.
