Librarian Awards 2024

September 25, 2024

The university's faculty senate recognizes excellence in librarianship with two annual awards. Lisa R. Carter, dean of libraries, presented the 2024 University Librarian awards to these recipients.

Fe Susan Go
Librarian for Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands

University Librarian Achievement Award for "exceptional distinction reflected in active and innovative career achievements in library, archival or curatorial services."

Susan Go is something of a legend, widely known for her deep expertise and also for her unflagging efforts over four decades of service to develop and grow one of the best Southeast Asia collections in the world.

Her willingness to take risks — she has carried parcels of books through floodwaters, and ventured into territories occupied by armed guerrillas — in pursuit of worthy materials and also in the use of new technologies to advance library practices has paid off in ways that will have lasting impact. And her enthusiasm for collaboration here and around the globe, with nonprofits, government entities, researchers, and students, has greatly expanded the reach and reputation of the library and the university.

Jesus Ivan Espinoza
Student success and engagement librarian

University Librarian Recognition Award for "active and innovative early-career achievement in library, archival or curatorial services."

Associate Librarian Jesus Espinoza is an indispensable instructor, bringing fresh perspectives and a creative approach to his teaching and mentorship. He is especially committed to connecting with students, for example by using popular, legible tropes and examples (in one case, social media influencers) to enliven discussions about the importance of evaluating sources in our modern and messy information landscape.

His commitment to student success and to diversity, equity, and inclusion drives his work with first generation students, students of color, and non-traditional students. And this work extends beyond the library: as leader of our peer information consultant program, which hires students from diverse backgrounds to share their skills and perspectives with students seeking help, he has developed partnerships with various campus groups and programs to maximize its potential.
