Technical Services

Mission

The mission of the Technical Services Department is to enable discovery and use of library resources in all subjects, languages, and formats. We partner with colleagues across the Library to procure, describe, organize, and mediate materials.

Organization

Technical Services is part of the Collections Division and contains two different sections, Acquisitions and Metadata. 

  • Acquisitions manages and coordinates acquiring tangible and electronic resources (including licensing); receives one-time resources and continuing resources in all formats (including activation of electronic resources); provides labeling for all technical services processing areas; manages the Exchange Program; and processes gifts to the Library.
  • Metadata resolves outages of electronic resources; provides knowledgebase maintenance; performs copyright review for HathiTrust resources; maintains High Level Browse mappings; administers electronic resource management (ERM) system and usage statistics operations; manipulates metadata in Mirlyn to correct, enhance, or triage access issues; maintains authority control; develops specifications for batch record loading (MARC, invoice, order); maintens of vendor administration sites; provides consultation and some production services for MARC and non-MARC metadata; and provides and maintains access to all resources acquired, licensed or gifted by/to the Library via bibliographic and holdings records.
