Who we are

What we do

As one of the areas in the Learning and Teaching Division, Learning Programs & Initiatives leads the library’s activities related to information literacy and scholarly research instruction, focusing on the concepts of critical thinking, source discovery and evaluation, and academic integrity. Services include instruction and course servicesengaged learning programsvideo streaming services, and library credit courses. We provide orientation services tailored to the needs of international students and transfer students, as well as outreach to campus student organizations and university learning communities. We also lead an annual, competitive undergraduate research award process.

We help users find library resources, connect with experts across the library, and design classes that incorporates information literacy skills through assignment design, scaffolded instruction, and student engagement. We are committed to designing inclusive and accessible learning experiences for all users to facilitate the discovery and use of information resources and expertise.

What we're working on

  • We continue to expand our digital instruction modules on various information literacy topics, and are working on assessing the use of these modules. 
  • Not only are we creating and delivering course-related information literacy instruction in-person and online, we continue to coordinate library workshops on research, technology, and publishing topics that are open to everyone in the U-M campus community. 
  • We are providing engaged learning opportunities for students through several programs including Peer Information ConsultingStudent Engagement Program, and the Michigan Library Scholars.
  • We are collaborating with library and campus colleagues to improve the instructional and pedagogical support for media (e.g. streaming films), while we launch a Media Services Librarian search (2022).
  • Drawing on support and collaboration from colleagues, we are engaging in instruction and/or outreach assessment activities, in various forms, and employing various methodologies.
