Returning Borrowed Items

Last updated: August 13, 2020

We encourage you to hold on to your library books while our buildings are closed. Books do not need to be returned by their due date, and they won't be recalled while our buildings are closed.

We will continue to automatically renew your checked-out materials until library buildings reopen. All interlibrary loans are renewed through September 7, 2020.

No fines are being assessed for late returns. If you receive a fine notice by mistake, please email

If you must return items

If you must return items while the buildings are closed, you can use one of the following outdoor book drops or send them back to us in the mail, as specified below.

Use outdoor drop boxes

These outdoor drop boxes are the only available book return locations:

  • Shapiro Library: Drop box near the southwest emergency exit doors, just off the South University Avenue driveway. Easiest access is from the Diag due to current road construction
  • Pierpont Commons: Outdoor drop box at the drive-up entrance off Murfin Avenue on North Campus

These drop boxes are emptied on weekdays and items are quarantined for 72 hours before processing. Don't worry if it takes a few days for returned items to clear from your account.

Send by mail

If you've left campus, please wait until library buildings reopen to mail items back to the library: University of Michigan Library, 913 South University Avenue, Room 104, Ann Arbor, MI 48109.
