Access to Physical Collections

Last updated: October 30, 2020

To prioritize the health and safety of our staff and community, we encourage use of online materials whenever possible.

We can get many things for you electronically and offer contactless pickup for certain materials. We are not delivering items at this time.

If you find a book you need in our catalog and it isn't available electronically, make a loan request. We will do our best to track it down for you.

You can request certain materials not available online through contactless pickup.

If you have need to consult physical materials onsite that are not online, please email your subject specialist with details about your request.

Books chapters and articles

We can scan small portions of our physical items, such as book chapters and journal articles. If we can’t scan something, we’ll place a request to see if another institution can.

Film media

When you find films in Library Search that aren't available to stream, you can request the DVD or Blu-ray disc for contactless pickup at Shapiro by using the "Book This" link in the catalog record, or by emailing the Askwith Media Library at Loan periods are for 1 week.

‘Library use only’ materials

For materials that can only be used in our buildings — such as artists’ books, manuscripts, maps, papyri, rare sheet music, and other special collections — please contact the respective location to inquire about options:

You can request items from our microform collections to use onsite by appointment in our dedicated research room.
