LEAGUE OF NATIONS The League of Nations existed from 1919 to 1946 when the United Nations was formed. The Documents Section of Alderman Library has an extensive collection of primary sources material from the League in paper. The UVA Law School Library owns a complete collection of League materials in microfilm. Copies of the index to the microfilm materials are available in both Law and Alderman. League of Nations Documents in paper - Alderman Government Information Resources, 3rd floor, Old Stacks Alderman owns many League materials in paper. The call number for these materials is LN. After the LN the materials are arranged by League of Nations Subject Category and sequentially numbered within the Subject Categories. A typical call number would be LN IX-195. Consolidated Catalog of League of Nations Publications Offered for Sale (Z 6479 .A9B57) by Mary Eva Birchfield is the guide to what Alderman Government Documents owns. It is kept on Aisle 19, Documents Reading Room. The League materials aren't in either VCAT or the international keyword index, so Birchfield is the only "index" to the collection. Birchfield is arranged by League of Nations Subject Categories and then sequentially within Subject Categories. It is annotated to show what Alderman Government Documents own in paper. Birchfield has a subject index, a sales number index and an Official Number index. Birchfield also has a good explanation of the League's Official Number scheme on page viii. Government Information Resources also owns the League of Nations Treaty Series in microfilm. This series is in Documents Film Cabinet no. 58. Guides to League Materials We own several other League of Nations bibliographies and publications catalogs. These are located on Aisle 19 in the Documents Reading Room. A Repertoire of League of Nations Serial Documents, 1919-1947 (Z 6473 .G45) contains a detailed description of the League of Nations number system for documents. Guide to League of Nations Publications: A Bibliographical Survey of the Work of the League, 1920-1947, by Hans Aufricht (Z 6473 .A85 1951) provides not only a guide to publications, but also contains chapters detailing the organizational structure of the League. Contains a good index. Bibliographical Handbook on the League of Nations, by Victor-Yves Ghebali League of Nations Documents, 1919-1946 - UVA Law School Library in Microfilm Reel Guide to League of Nations Documents, 1919-1946 - Z 6473 .R45 - Aisle 19, Documents Reading Room & Law Library The arrangement of both the Reel Guide and the microfilm is by broad League of Nations Subject Categories, e.g. Subject Category III is Health. Within each Subject Category the materials are arranged by Official League of Nations number, e.g. C.38.1939.XI. You must browse the Reel Guide entries within a given subject category to find relevant documents. The arrangement of the three volume Reel Guide and the Law School Library's microfilm collection differ. The Reel Guide lists all the Subject Categories first with a final section called Serial Publications. The Law School incorporates Serial Publications within Subject Categories instead of putting them separately at the end.
