REGIONAL ECONOMIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (REIS) on CD-ROM Published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, U. S. Dept. of Commerce, REIS contains estimates of personal income, per capita personal income, earnings by industry, full- and part-time employment by industry, regional economic profiles, transfer payments by major program, and farm income and expenses for states, metropolitan areas and counties. There are also estimates of quarterly personal income by state, data on intercounty flows; gross state product estimates, projections to the year 2040 of income and employment for states and metropolitan areas; and commuters' income flows. Coverage is from 1969-92, depending on the table. GETTING STARTED *Obtain the REIS disk caddy from the Electronic Arcade Desk (you need a picture ID to check out the disk.) *Insert the entire disk caddy in the CD-ROM player. * Double-click quickly on the appropriate alphabetical box of cd-rom titles; then double-click quickly on REIS. * When the search screen appears, you can begin your search by clicking open the TABLES menu at the top of the screen. SEARCHING HINTS [NOTE: To create a search query, you must select an options from the TABLES, AREAS AND TIME PERIODS menus at the top of the screen before you will be able to display results under the ACTION menu.] * Working from left to right across the screen, use the mouse to select a menu; then use the arrow keys key to select tables, areas and years. When within the smaller menus, the spacebar will select or deselect an option. * Within each menu, you can only select options in black (for example, you must select a state first; the counties option will then be highlighted for selection). SAMPLE SEARCH: California data * Use the arrow keys to pull down the TABLES menu and select an option: Detail County, MSA & State Tables * Use the arrow key to highlight desired item from these tables, spacebar to select, then enter to exit this menu: county profile [NOTE: You may select more than one table.] * Use the right arrow key to move the cursor to the AREAS menu. Select an option by highlighting it . states [NOTE: A box of options will open: use the spacebar to put a check mark next to a state; to exit this menu.] california Use the right arrow key to to bring down the TIME PERIOD menu. Select a range of years: last six years available * Once you have selected TABLES, AREAS, and TIME PERIOD, the ACTION menu is activated. Arrow to select ACTION to display, print, or copy. OTHER ITEMS IN THE TABLES MENU County Summary Program * This is an easier option for viewing and printing summary information on total personal income and per capita personal income for counties. Quarterly State Tables * These data files are not available on REIS, but are in another subdirectory. Bearfacts * This is a one page summary of economic conditions for every area in the U.S.: select for 1991-92, or for 1982-92. Journey to Work * These data files show the number of commuters from county of residence to county of work. They are not available on REIS, but are in another subdirectory. Gross State Product * This data is in another subdirectory on the CD. DISPLAYING YOUR RESULTS * When all options have been selected, the ACTION menu is activated. Arrow to this menu, select DISPLAY . [NOTE: If you want to print, press ESCape to return to the ACTION menu.] PRINTING * Select the ACTION menu, highlight PRINT . Press again at the printer port selection menu. DOWNLOADING * You can download your search results to a floppy disk for later use (IBM compatibles). To do this, select PRINT from the ACTION menu, select FILE OUTPUT , and type in a filename: a:\filename.doc . Keep pressing at the next screens to accept defaults. COPYING * You can extract data from this CD to output files for import into a spreadsheet or other applications. Select COPY from the ACTION menu; follow instructions on the screens. EXITING THE SYSTEM When your search is done, press ESC to quit, type Y, press twice to return to the database menu.
