Cassis: Basic Commands : DOS Version Brian Carpenter, Texas A & M University NOTE: Make sure the appropriate disc is in the cd-rom player before you begin your search. Example: To access, for example, the Cassis Bibliographic/Assignee disc at the C:\> prompt, type bib and touch . This action brings the Bibliographic/Assignee disc to its datafile selection menu. Using the up or down arrow keys, highlight the desired database and touch . At the opening menu, the Bibliographic/Assignee disc screen which provides a listing of the disc contents and date ranges covered. At this screen, press any key to enter the database. Next Cassis takes the user to the search mask for the database. From here, the user searches one or a combination of search indices to find the information desired. Example: In the Bibliographic/Assignee file, a user can search using the following search fields: Title/abstract Patent number Issue date State or country Status Assignee name Assignee Number With this data file or any other Cassis data file, it is best to use BROWSE to search for the appropriate terms needed. To use the Browse command, highlight the search field and touch . This action opens the Browse box. NOTE: In some Cassis menus a choice of Browse boxes are offered. A search can either be done by words or by entries. Most searches such as specific names of companies or persons work better if searched by entries. This is especially true of searches in both patent and trademark databases). It also works best in searches for assignee names, company addresses, company names, and word marks. Once in the Browse box, type in the terms being sought. The database responds by trying to move to that section of the index in the Browse box. The system highlights terms or phrases found. Touching transfers the information found to the Cassis search mask. Touching this key again determines the number of citations found in Cassis. When the total number of citations found appears in the lower right hand corner of the Cassis search screen, touching displays the items found. now acts as a toggle switch between the list of items found and the full text of an individual record. The acts as a toggle from the Patent Title List to three other lists of items that may be viewed. Touching the will switch the list to: Patent Title List Mode [default] Assignee List Mode USAPat Volume ID Mode Patent Classification Mode NOTE: The only full record that will appear is the one currently highlighted by Cassis on the item list. To see another full record, use the right arrow key to move forward in the list. Use the left arrow key to move backwards within this list. To switch from the brief to the full record, touch the . To print: Touching allows users to print or download records. A drop down menu appears with a listing of options. Select PRINT on the menu list by highlighting it and touching . This action opens the print format menu. Use the down arrow key to move down through the format options and highlight YES at the bottom of the menu. NOTE: Options on the print format menu such as print format can be changed by highlighting the command, touching the selecting from the list of options and touching to accept the change. Touching starts the printing operation. To stop once printing has begun, turn the printer to the off position. Next, touch the and keys at the same time. When Cassis asks to cancel or proceed, highlight cancel and touch . To print just one highlighted citation, highlight PRINT ONE and touch . Remember, whatever format last used is how the citation will print. To download: NOTE: Before downloading, make sure a formatted 5 1/4" [5.25"] double-sided, double density diskette is in drive A:\ otherwise, Cassis will not download the information. Select EXPORT on the menu list by highlighting it and touching . This action opens the print format menu. Use the down arrow key to move down through the format options and highlight YES at the bottom of the menu. NOTE: Options on the print format menu such as print format can be changed by highlighting the command, touching the selecting from the list of options and touching to accept the change. Touching starts the downloading operation. To stop the computer once downloading has begun, touch the and keys at the same time. When Cassis asks to cancel or proceed, highlight cancel and touch . To exit the database To exit any of the Cassis databases, touch . This action takes the user back to the search mask and Cassis asks if the user would like to exit the database.
