1994-95 OCCUPATIONAL OUTLOOK HANDBOOK ON CD-ROM This full text database describes approximately 250 occupations, with an emphasis on those occupations which require extensive education or training. The content is the same as in the paper version, however, searching capabilities are enhanced. 1. Ask for the CD-ROM at the Reference Kiosk. The software needed to run this CD-ROM is loaded on the Government Documents computer workstation. If that workstation is unavailable, ask the reference librarian for assistance. 2. Insert the CD-ROM into the D-drive. 3. The Government Documents CD-ROM MENU should be on the screen. If it is not, at the C:> type MENU . 4. At the C:> type OOH . 5. A title screen will appear, press . 6. Menu bars appear across the top and bottom of the screen. Help Takes you to the section of help that corresponds to your current search level. Once within help you can scroll to other sections. Options Allows you to change the search and display setting. The default settings should meet most searching needs. Please DO NOT select "save current settings." Doing so would change the default setting. If you suspect that someone has changed the default settings, ask the reference librarian for assistance. Select You may choose to search the records via the Table of Contents or search for terms in one or more fields (see step 7). Search Based on your Select choice, Search allows you to (A) choose a section heading from the table of contents, or (B) enter search term(s). Method B supports phrase, truncation, boolean and proximity searching (see step 7B). Sets Allows you to manipulate sets after you have formed them. Display Displays on the screen the contents of the last set created. Exit To leave the database Backup Return to the previous level To open a specific function window press the corresponding function key. Once a function window for through is open, you may scroll through to the others using the  / keys. Use  /  to highlight your selection within the current function window, then press . See "CD-ROM Quick Reference Guide" in the GovDoc CD-ROM Notebook for more detailed explanations of these and other commands. (The notebook is at the Reference Kiosk). 7. Searching: a. Table of Contents - If the Select window is not open, open it (press ). Move the highlight to "Table of Contents", press . The Search window will open to the Table of Contents. Use  /  and PgUp / PgDn keys to move the highlight bar to the desired section heading, press . The corresponding section of text will appear on the screen. Use  /  and PgUp / PgDn keys to scroll through the text. b. All words search - If the Select window is not open, open it (press ). Move the highlight to "All Words", press . The Search window will prompt you to enter the word(s) or phrase. options - enter: example: a single word nurse a phrase* physical therapist a truncated word or phrase librar? (also may be used with computer techn? boolean and proximity) boolean searches - and emergency and nurse or physician or doctor not** engineer not mechanical proximity searches chemistry near teacher (the default is 20 words art near teacher within 5 between the two terms, you may specify any number of words between your terms by using near...within #) * If and, or, not, or near are part of the phrase, the system will perform that type of search rather than search for the phrase. ** Be very careful using not, if the undesired term appears anywhere in the text of a document, the document will not be selected. Example: the person constructing the search "engineer not mechanical" may have intended to find documents about types of engineers other than mechanical engineers. However if the phrase "a civil engineer unlike a mechanical engineer..." appears in a document about civil engineers, that document would not be included in the "hits" for the search. Type your word(s) or phrase, then press . The first document matching your search term(s) will appear on the screen. The highlight bar will be on the same line of text as the first occurrence of your term if you only entered one, or the first occurrence of any of your terms if you entered multiple terms. Use /  to move to the next appearance of your term(s) within that document. 8. Numerous options are available. Follow the onscreen guides, and use Help. A printout of the help document is in the "GovDoc CD-ROM Notebook." 9. Printing: a. An entire search set: Press Sets Highlight "Print a set," b. Selected portions of a retrieved document: Use the arrow keys to position the cursor (underline) at the first word you wish to have printed. Press to activate the "Action Menu" Highlight "Begin Mark," Use  to highlight the desired text. Press to activate the "Action Menu" Highlight "Print Block," 10. Saving to a disk: a. An entire search set: Press Sets Highlight "Export a Set," Type a:filename b. Selected portions of a retrieved document: follow steps in 9b except instead of selecting "Print Block," select "Save Block." Note: The block will be saved to the c-drive. To move it to the a-drive, Press , select "temporary exit to DOS," at the DOS prompt, type copy OOH.SAV a: . (This file will contain your block(s) and any blocks created by previous searchers).
