NATIONAL ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, & ENVIRONMENTAL DATA BANK (NESE) NESE is a "one-stop source" for federal information on the United States. It includes data on the economy, society, and the environment. Updates are quarterly. GETTING STARTED The NESE program is currently on the government documents workstation. Exit whatever program is currently in use. When the menu program appears, type the letter A or highlight the first line and press ENTER. BROWSE SEARCHING WITH NESE The primary selection menu allows you to search by the following methods: SOURCE Provides a list of agencies supplying information to NESE. The next step is to search the program titles of an agency. TOPIC Provides a list of general topics such as Education, Climate, Energy, etc. The next step is a list of programs (from any agency) which cover that topic. PROGRAM Provides a list of sources included on NESE. Ex: Digest of Education Statistics. TITLE Allows you to search for keywords in document titles. ITEM Search by NESE's own document identification codes. THE NESE KEYBOARD ENTER Select option, mark record for viewing. ESC Return to previous screen or operation. PAGE UP/DOWN Move one screen at a time. ARROWS Move one line at a time, move across the screen. F1 Help - information on the program at that point. F2 Information on the source in use at that point. F3 View marked documents. F4 View boolean operators in use and terms combined at a point during a search. F5 Copy to 3.5" formatted disk or print to printer. F7 Select boolean operator when combining terms. F8 Mark entries or portions of text. SAMPLE NESE SEARCHES SEARCH #1 -- FINDING GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT STATISTICS Method A: Select PROGRAM from primary selection screen. Highlight "National Income and Product Accounts" and press ENTER. The next menu allows you to search by SERIES, TEXT, or TITLE. Choose SERIES. Type Gross Domestic Product to move down the list of series titles. There are several titles beginning with this phrase. Highlight desired title. In this case, choose first one with simple title "Gross Domestic Product". Press F3 to view contents. You will see a list of table headings. If you choose the first one you should see a chart with a time series back to 1959 showing GDP by quarter. Page down to see the actual figures. Method B: Select TOPIC at primary selection menu. Choose ECONOMIC INFORMATION. At list of programs choose "National Income and Product Accounts". Continue as in Method A above. Method C: Choose TITLE at primary selection menu. Type GDP when list of words appears. Highlight GDP and press ENTER. Press F3 to view list of titles containing GDP. To see list of titles containing Gross Domestic Product, you'll have to search for and mark each word separately. Then press F3 to see records containing all three words. Note: This is a very general search. Still, you can evaluate results from different methods used above. Use title searching with caution since synonyms and abbreviations can affect results. SEARCH #2: WEATHER DATA FOR CINCINNATI 1. At primary selection menu choose TOPIC. 2. Highlight CLIMATE in list of topics and press ENTER. 3. There is only one program available so press ENTER again. 4. Choose to search by LOCATION. Begin typing Cincinnati. 5. You may see data for different weather stations in the Cincinnati area. Choose one, highlight it, press ENTER, and F3 to view data. SEARCH #3: FINDING STATISTICS ON THE TIRES INDUSTRY Method A: 1. At primary selection menu, choose TOPIC. 2. From list of topics, choose INDUSTRIAL STATISTICS. 3. Choose the "Census and Annual Survey of Manufactures" program. You may search by INDUSTRY, SIC CODE, or TITLE. 4. Choose either industry or title, then type tires. Or, choose SIC code and type in proper number (3011). 5. Highlight entry you wish to view, press ENTER, then F3 to view tables. Column headings are at the beginning or press F4. Method B: 1. At primary selection menu, choose TITLE. 2. When word list appears, type tires. 3. Since there is only one record containing this word, you should arrive at the same chart as above. Note: Typing the word in at TITLE or INDUSTRY may not always yield satisfactory results if you choose a word that is not used to describe an industry. SEARCH #4: FINDING HISTORICAL INFORMATION ON THE FEDERAL DEBT 1. Choose TITLE at primary selection menu. 2. At word list, type Federal, mark by pressing ENTER. Then type Debt, and mark also. 3. Press F3 to combine terms. 4. From list of titles containing both these words, choose "Historical Tables from the Budget of the US Government". 5. To see figures in the table, page down to the line under "Attachments" which begins with WK1HIST07Z1. Press F3. 6. The result is a large table which you will have to page across the screen with arrow keys to see. Note: Many NESE files contain these worksheets which are not visible at first.
