National Criminal Justice Reference Service on CD-ROM (NCJRS) NCJRS is an index to bibliographic records for over 125,000 articles, documents, research reports, annual reports, program descriptions and evaluations, and books in all areas of criminal justice. Subjects include prisons/prisoners, courts, crime and criminals, forensics and police work. Scope: 1972 to date. Updated twice a year. GETTING STARTED *Obtain the NCJRS disk caddy from the Electronic Arcade Desk (you need a picture ID to check out the disk). *Insert the entire disk caddy in the CD-ROM player. * Double-click quickly on the appropriate alphabetical box of cd-rom titles. * Double-click quickly on NCJRS. SEARCHING Global Subject Searching (keyword) Think of the terms that describe your topic, e.g., for the topic, freedom of speech cases in the US Supreme Court use : freedom speech supreme court Type your terms in the global subject search box. Press . The number of items found (hits) will display in the bottom right corner of the screen. [Use the asterisk (*) to truncate a word (for example, type prison* to retrieve prison, prisons, prisoner, prisoners, etc.)] You may combine terms with Boolean logic using AND, OR, or NOT. Examples: gun* or firearm* gangs and california To search phrases, use ADJ (next to) or NEAR (within a certain number of words): Examples: capital adj punishment freedom near2 speech Other search options If you know some of the words in other search fields, such as author, title, publication place, type terms in appropriate search boxes. [There is a primary search box and a secondary search box. Press PG DOWN to view the secondary search box.] Press to run a search. The number of results will display in the lower right corner of the screen. DISPLAYING YOUR RESULTS Press CTRL - D to display the brief title list of records. To go through the brief list, use the PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN keys. To see full records, press . To move through a full record, use PGUP/PGDOWN keys. To display the next full record, click on the down arrow at the bottom right of the screen. To move back and forth between brief and full record displays, press . To mark records for printing, press CTRL and simultaneously clicking the left mouse button. Marked records will be highlighted in a different color when you move to another record. To return to the Search screen, click on the eyeglasses icon on the toolbar at the top left of the screen. PRINTING To print records, press CTRL - P. Select document format, what range of records to print, and page eject options by clicking on the down arrow for each option and highlighting your selection. Click on the PRINT button to print. DOWNLOADING You can download your search results to a disk for later use (on an IBM compatible workstation). Insert formatted diskette in the a: drive. Press CTRL-R to display the downloading options screen. Select export type, document format, and what range to download by clicking on the down arrow for that option and highlighting your selection. Type a file name in the Output File box. Always begin your filename with a: (e.g. a:juvenile.doc) Click on EXPORT button to download. EXITING THE SYSTEM Click on the FILE menu, then select EXIT from the options. At the list of databases, flip open the CD drive and the caddy will eject automatically. FINDING THE ARTICLE, BOOK OR REPORT Search for desired titles in a PEGASUS terminal to see if the Library owns the items. Example: t law and society review Some items may not appear in PEGASUS.
