Joint Electronic Library (Doc Ref Office U408 J64) I. Introduction The Joint Electronic Library is a CD-ROM library of U.S. government military publications and documents. The main categories are: A. Doctrinal publications of the Defense Dept. Does not include Regulations, Instructions, Manuals, etc. Exception: Manuals in the following series are included: AFM, AFP, AFR, FM, FMFM, FMFRP, JFACC, JP, OH Does not include Navy doctrinal publications B. Indexes to military periodicals and publications Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals Persian Gulf War Special Bibliography C. Military-related papers, articles, and studies II. Searching JEL A. Boolean search 1. Press Enter to select a search from the Library menu 2. Select the Subject Area or Catalog you wish to search and press Enter 3. When the Browse menu is highlighted, press the right arrow key to highlight Search and press Enter 4. Type a word, phrase, or number to search for and press Enter 5. When the pull-down menu appears, press Enter to view the documents, or select one of the Boolean phrases (And, Or, And Not) to refine your search. You may also select a field (Title, Number, Author, Date, or Source) by typing the F3 key 6. Items will display in ranked order, according to the number of hits in each document. Press Enter to select the document you wish to read. 7. To move back one step, press ESC. To retrieve the opening menu (Subject Area or Catalog), you will need to highlight Library , then press ESC twice. B. Browse search 1. Press Enter to select a search from the Library menu 2. Select the Subject Area or Catalog you wish to search and press Enter 3. Type a word, phrase, or number to search for and press Enter 4. When the Browse menu is highlighted, press Enter 5. Items will display in alphabetical order. To jump through the list, type 2 to move to 20 per cent through the list, 3 to move to 30 per cent, etc. To jump to the first letter of a title, type that letter, e.g. typing C will take you to the first title that begins with that letter. 6. To move back one step, press ESC. To retrieve the opening menu (Subject Area or Catalog), you will need to highlight Library , then press ESC twice. III. Viewing Documents A. When reading a document, you may conduct a Local Search 1. Press L for Local Search, then type the text you wish to search for, e.g. : Civil W, to search for Civil War Oper, to search for operate, operational, cooperate, etc. MacArt to search for MacArthur 2. To move from hit to hit, type the Alt-L keys B. You may write and attach Sticky Notes to a document Use the arrow keys to position the left margin pointer to the relevant line, then press Enter to create the sticky note. You may edit or print the sticky note, as instructed in the Guide, pp. 7-8 IV. Downloading or printing text A. To download text 1. Type M to begin marking the text, then move the arrow key to highlight the portion of the desired text 2. Type C to copy the marked text to the reference file (or to your IBM-formatted diskette) 3. Type a: filename when the "Enter Reference Note" window appears 4. The saved text will be appended to existing text each time new text is saved from the same search B. To print a page or multiple pages from a document, type P to bring up the print menu. BECAUSE SOME DOCUMENTS ARE VERY LONG, PLEASE BE CAREFUL IN DECIDING WHETHER TO PRINT A COMPLETE DOCUMENT. YOU MAY PREFER TO DOWNLOAD TO YOUR OWN DISK. C. At the present time, we do not have the capability to view or print images V.
