International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision; Clinical Modification, 6th Revision (ICD-9-CM) CD-ROM Issued: October 1998 SuDocs: HE22.41/2: Paper Equivalent: HE22.41:Year/V.1-2 Internet Version: http://cedr.lbl.gov/icda8.html (8th revision) Issuing Agency: U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services ; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Health Care Financing Administration. Item no.: 444-P-4 This publication codes diseases, injuries, conditions, drugs and procedures into numerical designations. Such coding is used to provide access to information from medical records. This information can then be utilized as statistics for medical researchers, educators and administrators. Medical coding has also come to be utilized for the billing and payment of health care services. The World Health Organization is the parent organizer of this classification system. The ICD-9-CM is recommended for use in all clinical settings but is required for reporting diagnoses and diseases to all U.S. Public Health Service and Health Care Financing Administration programs. Guidance in the use of this classification can be found in the "Guidance in the Use of ICD-9-CM." section of the CD-ROM. I first experienced using the International Classification of Diseases after receiving a telephone reference question at the Government Publications reference desk I was working at. A lady called and said she had been diagnosed as a 296.80 at a recent doctor's visit and demanded to know what that meant. She was very agitated when I said it would take me a while to find out what that meant. She wouldn't give me her number to call her back, but said she would call me back in 30 minutes. Luckily, I found the International Classification of Diseases and discovered that a 296.80 was "Manic-depressive psychosis, unspecified." I was glad I could help her and was also perhaps more understanding of her agitation Installing and Starting the ICD-9-CM CD-ROM The instruction booklet says that this CD can be used on both Windows and Windows95 platforms. To retrieve and display the records found from your search, click on the OK button and your first hit will be displayed. Next and Previous icons are available on the upper menu bar to move through your list of hits. You can also use the Query Templates choice from the upper menu bar to do searches that are more focused. First open one of the databases from the contents opening page. Then choose Query Templates. Depending on the database your are in, the appropriate template will be displayed. One template (e.g. after choosing "Tabular List of Diseases from the contents) allows you to search code numbers. Another template allows "Query by Term" for those databases that are word based. You can printing by either blocking or tagging. Blocking is achieved by holding down your mouse button and dragging it through the text you wish to print. Tagging can be done by placing your cursor anywhere in the record and clicking on the "Tag" icon form the upper menu bar. A red vertical line will appear to show that a record had been tagged.
