1994 GREEN BOOK Overview of Entitlement Programs on CD-ROM The 1994 Green Book provides full text access to descriptions of programs within the jurisdiction of the Committee on Ways and Means (U.S. House of Representatives). It also includes sections on background materials, other Federal assistance programs, and tax expenditures and provisions. GETTING IN: 1. Ask at the Reference Kiosk for the CD-ROM. 2. The software to run this CD-ROM is loaded on the Government Documents computer workstation. Insert the CD-ROM into the d-drive. 3. At the C:> type CD GREEN . 4. At the C:> type GREEN . 5. The system will take a few minutes to load, when the title page appears, press any key. SEARCHING THE DATABASE: The menus at the top and bottom of the screen give available commands. Press for context specific help screens. Press to exit help. 1. Table of Contents Search: a. Press . b. "+ 1994 Green Book" will appear on the screen. Press to expand the table of contents to the next level. Use the  and  keys to move the highlight bar. At any line that begins with a "+", press to expand the table of contents one level. Press  to contract the table of contents. Press to view the document, starting at the selected point. 2. Keyword Search: a. Press to open a search screen. b. Simple search: type your search term in the "Word or phrase" blank . A window will open, telling you how many documents, if any contain your search term i. Press to view the list of documents retrieved. ii. Use  /  to highlight the desired document . Press to go to the first occurrence of your search term. Press again to go to the next occurrence, etc. Use  /  , PgUp / PgDn to scroll through the document. to return to the list of documents. iii. Press to edit your search or to begin a new search. c. More advanced searching techniques (Boolean, proximity, and truncation) are supported. Use the help screens and technical documentation for guidance. PRINTING: 1. While viewing the desired document, press P. 2. A window will open with "Begin Printing" highlighted, . Note: some documents are very long, If you only need portions of the text, please use the mark text option (explained below). COPYING TO A FILE: 1. While viewing the desired document, press F. 2. A window will open. Use the  to move the highlight to "filename". Change the filename to a:xxx (xxx = desired filename). 3. Insert a formatted disk into the a-drive. Use  to move highlight to "begin copy to file" . Note: if you only need a portion of a document, consider using the mark text option. MARK TEXT OPTION: 1. While viewing the desired document, press M to choose to mark text. 2. Move the cursor to the beginning of the desired section, press C. 3. Move the cursor to the end of the desired section, press C. The selected text will be highlighted. 4. Press N to open the Notepad screen. If there is undesired text in the notepad, press C to clear it. System will ask if you really want to clear notepad, . 5. Press P to paste your text to the notepad. 6. Press Print/File. a. To print: Highlight "Print" . A window will open, . b. To save to a file: Highlight "File" . A window will open, arrow down to "filename". As above, change filename to a:xxx. Arrow up to "copy to file" . 7. Press to return to the selected document. Press M to unmark text. Note: You may place several selections in the notepad prior to printing or saving to a file. Please clear the notepad when you are finished. EXITING THE DATABASE: 1. Press . 2. The system will ask you to confirm that you really want to exit. Press y . 3. Wait for the C:> to appear, then type CD\ . 4. At the C:> type menu . 5.
