FBIS PUBLICATIONS FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE on CD-ROM Sherry DeDecker University of California, Santa Barbara FBIS PUBLICATIONS contain the full text of the Daily Reports of the U. S. Foreign Broadcast Information Service. FBIS monitors news sources in countries around the world, and publishes full text or summary translations of selected reports on a variety of political, economic and social issues. The quarterly disks cover the period from July 1996 to the present. Prior to July 1996, the reports are in microfiche in Government Publications: PREX 7.10: FBIS- The index to these reports from 1991-1996 is on the FBIS Index CD-Rom; earlier print indexes are in the Reference collection. GETTING STARTED * Obtain the FBIS Publications disk caddy from the Electronic Arcade desk. Insert the entire disk caddy into the CD-player. * Double-click quickly on the appropriate alphabetical box of CD-ROM titles; then double-click quickly on FBIS Publications. * Arrow to select the time period that matches the disk you are using; click OK. SEARCHING * Type your word in the first box; then use the tab key or click the mouse to place the cursor in a second box, if another term is desired. To search as a phrase, you must use quotations. You may also click the arrow to the right of each box to access a list of words; clicking on a word from the list will add it to the search box. "united nations" AND bosnia AND clinton * To limit your search (language, date, country, etc.), click to place the cursor in the appropriate box and add search criteria. * You can truncate (cut short) a word to get alternative endings by using an asterisk: homelessness and child* to retrieve child, children * Click in the Search box. DISPLAYING YOUR RESULTS * Documents found with your search terms will display on the following screen. Click the up and down arrows to go through the screen; pressing enter on a highlighted document will retrieve it. * To close a report and return to the list, click the X at the top right of the report screen. * Available options displaying at the top of the screen are accessible when highlighted. When in a document, all icons will highlight, allowing you to access previous document, next document, etc. PRINTING/DOWNLOADING * Click the print icon to print a report. When printing is finished, click to close the print box. * To download to a disk; click on File, Save As. Insert a disk into the A drive on the computer. * Type a: your file name over the text in the highlighted box e.g. a:bosnia.doc . * To begin a new search, click on the magnifying glass icon. EXITING THE SYSTEM When your search is done, click on the Exit icon at the top of the screen. Flip open the CD drive and the caddy will eject automatically.
