D&M QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE #1 DOCUMENTS & MAPS DEPARTMENT The DOCUMENTS & MAPS DEPARTMENT is located on the ground floor of the Bailey/Howe Library (Rooms 009-010). It contains four major collections of material useful to UVM students, faculty, and the general public. They are U.S. government documents, legal resources, selected international documents, and map resources. U.S. GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS U.S. Government Documents contain congressional hearings, research reports, journals, pamphlets, laws, regulations and electronic databases. The collection has over 1 million paper documents, 750,000 microfiche sheets, and over 500 CD-ROM disks. The B/H Library is a selective depository for federal publications and receives approximately 90% of the materials distributed by the U.S. Government Printing Office. These publications, microfiche, and databases can help you write a paper, find statistics, design a reactor, or research a thesis. In short, they contain information on popular topics such as aging, crime, education, the environment, foreign relations, health, science, technology, women, and youth. The best catalogs and indexes to identify recent U.S. Government publications are listed below. All of the sources listed are located in the Documents & Maps Department. Also, you can use LUIS at the appropriate computer terminals in the library and across campus. LUIS (the online catalog) In addition to books and other library resources, LUIS contains records for approximately 250,000 U.S. government documents published since the mid-1970's. Additional records for new publications that the library receives are added each month. Consult the library's guide to LUIS for tips on how to search the online catalog. Please note that items in the online catalog that indicate a location of "B/H Documents Dept (Ground floor)" are housed in D&M. Also, any items that give "Vt Dept of Libraries, Montpelier" as the only location are probably in D&M. Autographics Impact Government Documents Catalog (CD-ROM) Library has: 1976- This CD-ROM version of the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications is the basic and most general index to all U.S. government information published by the U.S. Government Printing Office. D&M also has the printed volumes of the Monthly Catalog since 1895 (DOCS INDEX GP 3.8: ). CIS Annual (DOCS INDEX KF 49 C62) Library has: 1970- It indexes and summarizes U.S. congressional publications such as hearings, committee prints, and reports. American Statistics Index (DOCS INDEX Z 7554 U5A46) Library has: 1973- It indexes social and economic statistics published by the federal government since the early 1960's. There are also several indexes that you can use to locate older U.S. documents for historical research. Ask the D&M staff, and they will show these indexes to you. LEGAL RESOURCES The B/H Library has a large collection of legal sources for the United States, New England, and New York. They are housed in several areas of the library, D&M, Reference, Special Collections, and the general collection. In D&M you can find federal regulations, state laws for New England and New York, U.S. Supreme Court opinions, and more. Special Collections houses legal materials relating to Vermont. For more information on the library's legal resources, consult "Guide to Legal Sources Owned by Bailey/Howe Library." INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTS The B/H Library has a selective collection of major documents from the United Nations, Canada, and Great Britain. Some are housed in D&M; others are in Reference, Periodicals, or the general collection. For more information, ask the staff in D&M or Reference. MAP RESOURCES The Map Room has over 185,000 thematic and topographic maps, aerial photographs, satellite images, and atlases. The collection is international in scope and has excellent coverage for the United States and Canada. Most maps in the collection were published during the 20th Century. The resources in the Map Room can help you find your way from Burlington to the Big Apple or Appleby, Texas. Thematic maps can show you the distribution of peoples, languages, or nuclear reactors across the United States. Other maps can help you investigate the topographic or geologic features of a specific location. FINDING MAPS Sheet maps are not listed in LUIS. Hence, it is important to learn how the collection is organized. It basically has two main parts with a few, smaller collections. One major part is the cataloged map collection which includes thematic maps (maps that deal with a particular subject or topic) and medium to small scale topographic maps (maps that show contours, elevation, natural features, and cultural landmarks), and many city maps. To find these maps, use the department's map card catalog. It is organized according to the American Geographical Society Cataloging System. The other main part of the map collection is large scale topographic maps (1:24,000) for the entire United States. These maps give detailed topographic information helpful to environmental researchers, students, professional planners, and geographers. Use index maps provided by the United State Geological Survey to locate specific maps. The collection also has comparable topographic maps for Canada. Other important but smaller collections include aerial photos of Vermont, official state highway maps, and materials from the Earth Science Information Center (ESIC) network.
