Introduction and Description
The Declassified Documents Index on CD-ROM indexes around 70,000 American Declassified Documents written by government organizations. This index includes documents composed and opened from 1904-1998. The index record contains a citation that provides dates, an abstract, the keyword and subject heading, the number of pages of the document and classification numbers for on-line retrieval or microfiche.
Getting Started with Declassified Documents CD-ROM DoX86
The CD-ROM can be used on the Government Documents computer labelled as the UN Index on CD-ROM computer. Place the CD in the CD tray named drive D: and load it into the computer. Once the CD is loaded go to the screen and choose the icon of Declassified Documents located on the desktop at the left hand side of the screen. Hit Enter when you get to the initial screen and you will be immediately sent to the search screen.
How to Use the Basic Index
The search screen has entry fields for the issue date, date classified, document classification, descriptions of the document, the document Source, text, and a text availability field. These fields may be filled in with information that you possess or by going to the Browse Menu on the top of the screen and choosing Entries. A list of all dates or titles for that entry box will appear. Chose the appropriate entry and hit OK. This places your choice in the search screen entry box. Hit the Enter key and it will give the number of how many entries are under your choice.
How to Display Information
Go to the top of the screen and under the Data Menu choose Display. This will give you either a listing of the citations you chose or the citation screen if you only chose one item. If you have chosen more than one document to look at then from the list choose the citation you wish to view. If you have chosen many you can Sort or Jump from one to another by going to the View Menu.
How to Print
Go to the Printer1 icon at the top of the screen or go to the File Menu and choose Print. This will print the screen. The printer that this document will go to is in the Government Documents Center near the computer.
How to Download
Put a floppy disk into Drive A:. Go to the File Menu and choose Export. Once in the Export screen fill in what type of file you want to save it as, what range of documents you want exported, a title for the document, choose drive A: and hit the Export button. This will save the information to the floppy disk.
Where is the Microfiche ?
The physical Declassified Documents are on fiche located in the Serials and Microforms Room in the Graduate Library under the fiche number of MICRO-F X194. The documents will be numerically arranged by the fiche number found on the citation screen you printed or downloaded.
