ADMINISTRATIVE NOTES Newsletter of the Federal Depository Library Program Vol. 18, no. 05 GP 3.16/3-2:18/05 March 15, 1997 Budget of the U.S., Economic Report of the President Now On GPO Access Two recently published budget documents are now available online via GPO Access: Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 1998, and Economic Report of the President, 1997. The Budget database contains a summary of the President's budget proposals along with the following separately searchable documents: Analytical Perspectives; Historical Tables; Appendix; A Citizen's Guide to the Federal Budget; Budget System and Concepts; and Principles of Budgeting for Capital Asset Acquisitions. The Economic Report includes 1) current and foreseeable trends and annual numerical goals concerning topics such as employment, unemployment, production, real income and Federal budget outlays; 2) employment objectives for significant groups of the labor force 3) annual numeric goals, and 4) a program for carrying out program objectives. Supplementary reports can be issued to the Congress which contain additional and/or revised recommendations. Both documents are available as ASCII text and as Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The databases are accessible via the World Wide Web, WAIS client software, or SWAIS. The page for connecting to either of these databases is http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/budget/index.html. Telnet Access (SWAIS) You can also connect to GPO Access via Telnet. The address is swais.access.gpo.gov. Type guest (lowercase) at the login prompt (no password is required). You will be using SWAIS. File transfers are by Internet e-mail or screen capture. Dial-in Access (SWAIS) Users without Internet access can dial-in. Use a modem to call 202-512-1661; type swais and then login as guest. The modem settings are 8N1, full duplex. You will be using SWAIS. File transfers are by Internet e-mail or screen capture. WAIS Client Access If you are using WAIS client software, you will need to create a source file for the new database. Instructions for adding source files to the WinWAIS and MacWAIS client software are available below. A. Creating a Source File For WinWAIS: Execute the following steps to create a source file for the new database: 1. Open the WinWAIS software; 2. Pull down the Edit menu and select the Select Sources item; 3. Click on the button labeled New; 4. Fill in the name, host and database fields using the information provided under the database description heading; 5. Fill in the database description (optional); 6. Click the OK button in the Edit WAIS Source Definition Window; 7. Click on the OK button in the Selected WAIS Sources Window. B. Creating a Source File For MacWAIS: Execute the following steps to create a source file for the new database: 1. Open the MacWAIS software; 2. Pull down the Sources menu and select the New menu item; 3. Fill in the name, host and database fields using the information provided under the database description heading. 4. Fill in the database description (optional); 5. Click the OK button. Helpful Hints for searching these databases via GPO Access will be available online. Once you are connected to the database, the search "helpful hints" will retrieve instructions and sample searches.
