Second Circular

I. PLACE AND DATE

The 25th International Congress of Papyrology will take place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, Sunday, July 29 — Saturday, August 4, 2007.

On-site check-in will begin Sunday, July 29 at 3:00 PM on the second floor Concourse of the Michigan League located at 911 North University, Ann Arbor. The Opening Ceremony will begin at 6:00 PM in the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre located on the north end of the Michigan League. The local organizing committee will host a welcoming reception immediately following the ceremony.

The working sessions of the Congress will begin on Monday, July 30 at 9:00 AM and will end mid-day Saturday, August 4. All sessions will be held in the Chemistry Building on the central campus of the University of Michigan. New this year will be a plenary session on the Unesco Resolution held on Wednesday, August 1 at 9:00 AM in the Mendelssohn Theater.

II. CONGRESS PROGRAM

All papers and communications should be in one of the four languages generally used at papyrological conferences (English, French, German, or Italian).

Participants are strongly encouraged to present papers that deal with new or interdisciplinary approaches to papyrology, particularly in areas where papyrological research intersects with archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, Egyptology, coptic studies, arabic papyrology, etc. We also encourage proposals for panels with 3-4 participants.

The August 1 plenary session will have invited speakers to discuss the Unesco Resolution against the exportation of antiquities and its implications for collections and papyrologists.

Contributions may be submitted in the following categories:

    Papers will be grouped according to topic and should not exceed 15 minutes. The preliminary division of sessions is:

    2. Literary and semi-literary papyri
    3. Papyri and biblical studies
    4. Religion and magic
    5. Juristic papyrology
    6. Onomastics and prosopography
    7. Linguistics
    8. Social and cultural history

  2. New texts (Workshops)
    We suggest that papers which discuss a single text, especially a new or interesting papyrus, be placed in a workshop. Presentations in workshops should not exceed 10 minutes, followed by discussion. The preliminary division of the workshops is, but is not limited to:
    1. Documentary papyri, Ptolemaic (Greek / Demotic)
    2. Documentary papyri, Roman (Greek / Latin / Demotic / Coptic)
    3. Documentary papyri, Late Antiquity (Greek / Latin / Coptic / Arabic)
    4. Literary or semi-literary papyri
  3. Posters
    Posters should be submitted Monday, July 30 beginning at 8:00 AM at the Administrative Desk of the Congress in the Atrium of the Chemistry Building. Posters will be displayed for the duration of the Congress in the Commons Area of the Chemistry Building which will be the central location for all coffee breaks. Additional information on a paper, workshop or other project (e.g., cartographical or archaeological studies, etc.) may also be included. Posters will be listed in the proceedings of the Congress but not reproduced.

Guidelines for Presentations and Abstracts

Participants wishing to deliver papers, present a text in workshop format, or present a poster are required to submit an abstract. Abstract submission can be completed by visiting the Congress web page at http://www.lib.umich.edu/pap/ICP25/ and clicking on the abstract link.

Abstract Requirements
  1. Proposed title of paper, author's name, institution, complete contact information
  2. The maximum length for the abstract is 250 words. Please use 12 point Times New Roman font for Latin characters. The abstract text should not include subheadings, tables, figures or references and preferably should be written as one paragraph.
  3. At the end of the abstract, please indicate the suggested session (see above, A.–P.) or the workshop (see above, 1.–4.), or poster. All participants giving papers or presenting a text in a workshop should also include a short curriculum vitae for the chairpersons.
  4. When submitting abstracts please indicate any audio/visual needs you will require (slide projector, overhead projector, video recorder or required equipment for computer presentations). The deadline for abstract submission is March 15, 2007.

All abstracts are subject to review by the Congress Committee. Submitters will be notified directly by April 30st, 2007. A summary of abstracts will be included in the conference information packets.

The deadline for panel proposals is also March 15, 2007.

Proceedings

Detailed information on submissions for the proceedings will be included in the participant packets. Submission deadline is December 31, 2007.

III. CONGRESS REGISTRATION

Registration for the 25th International Congress of Papyrology is available on-line at http://www.conferences.housing.umich.edu/papycongress. Participants can also download a printable form on this website to register via fax or mail. If you register on-line you will receive an email confirmation immediately after registering and a more detailed letter will be sent via email within 24 hours after registering. If you register via fax or mail and provide an email address your confirmation will be sent via email. If you don’t provide an email address the confirmation will be sent via mail. The early Congress registration deadline, with reduced fees, is May 15, 2007. The final congress registration deadline is July 1, 2007.

IV. TRAVELING TO THE CONGRESS

Ann Arbor is served by Detroit Metro Airport which is located about 28 miles east of Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor is in the Eastern Standard Time Zone. There are several flights daily from most major cities in Europe scheduled by major American carriers (Delta, Continental, Northwest, United, US Airways, etc.) and European airlines (Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines). The flight to Detroit Metro takes about 7 to 9 hours from England and continental Europe. The drive to Ann Arbor from Detroit Metro Airport takes about 30 minutes. Shuttle companies servicing Detroit Metro Airport are: http://www.customtransit.com/ and http://www.selectride.com/. Taxis and private limousines are also available. Participants will need to arrange their own transportation to and from the airport.

All non-U.S. citizens traveling to the Congress must either obtain a visitors visa or reside in a country that is a member of the Visa Waiver Program. See http://www.lib.umich.edu/pap/ICP25/visa.html for more information on visas.

If you are traveling from overseas and need to exchange money upon arrival in the US, please do so at Detroit Metro Airport. There are currency exchange windows in each terminal. In the McNamara Terminal it is located on the international arrival level; in the Smith Terminal it is in the ticket lobby next to the Southwest Airlines ticket counter; in the Berry Terminal it is in the ticket lobby. There are numerous Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) on or very near central campus and this is the easiest way to obtain US currency during your visit.

Congress events are scheduled to occur at the Michigan League (which includes the Mendelssohn Theater), Chemistry Building, and Rackham Auditorium, all of which are located on the central campus of the University of Michigan, in the heart of Ann Arbor. The campus is served by several bus lines. For further information visit the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) site. V. ACCOMMODATIONS

Participants are responsible for making their own reservations by contacting one of the Congress hotels or campus housing establishments. Please visit the links below for detailed information and directions for each housing option. Please note that Michigan has 6% sales tax. All reservations must be made by Thursday, June 28, 2007.

The Inn at the Michigan League is located on the fourth floor of the Michigan League on the central campus of the University of Michigan. This is the closest hotel to the Congress meeting space. For reservations please telephone the Inn directly at 1-734-764-3177 or e-mail nairda@umich.edu. Please reference the 25th Congress of Papyrology when making your reservation. Credit card information will be required to secure the room. The cost of the rooms is $130 per night single occupancy or $140 per night double occupancy for Monday - Thursday and $135 per night single occupancy or $145 per night double occupancy for Saturday and Sunday.

The Bell Tower Hotel is located on the central campus of the University of Michigan and is very near to the Congress headquarters. Credit card information will be required to guarantee the room. The Bell Tower room rates are $152 single occupancy and $174 double occupancy per night plus tax. Please note that this is a non-smoking establishment.

The Dahlmann Campus Inn is Ann Arbor's premier hotel and is located at the edge of the University of Michigan Campus within walking distance of the Congress site. For reservations please contact the hotel directly at 1-800-666-8693 and reference group prospectus number 6231-International Congress of Papyrology. Credit card information will be required to guarantee the room. The Campus Inn room rates are $130-$206 single occupancy and $153-$229 double occupancy. Please note that this is a non-smoking establishment.

The Kensington Court, Ann Arbor is located off-campus at South State Street and Interstate 94 in the Briarwood Shopping Mall circle, only 2.5 miles from downtown Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan and 25 miles from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Congress participants that choose this hotel will be shuttled to and from campus each day. The cost of the rooms is $99.00 per night regardless of room type.

The Holiday Inn Express is just two miles south of the University of Michigan, near I-94. Participants choosing this hotel will be shuttled to and from campus each day for the Congress. The cost of rooms is $89.00 per night regardless of room type.

Please be sure to stipulate which hotel you would like to stay at and reference the University of Michigan Department of Classical Studies International Congress of Papyrology when making your reservation. Cambridge House 541 Thompson, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1360. (734) 764-5297, fax (734) 764-1557. Located only one block from the Central Campus. Residence hall style rooms have a private bathroom, and are air-cooled. Entire building is smoke free. Attached to the Michigan Union for convenience to shopping and food. Linen packets are provided that contain sheets, pillow case, towels, and wash cloth. Pillows and a light blanket are also provided. Rates: $48 single, $60 double, or $30 for the double per night.

Couzens Hall: Overnight residence hall space on the University of Michigan Campus. Accommodations in a non-air conditioned residence hall rooms include: floor shared baths, one each male and female per floor; and a linen packet consisting of pillow, bed sheets, spread, and towels. The package rate for a residence hall single room is $289.55; the double rate is $199.85 per person. These rates are for a six-night stay, with no meals provided. (Arrival July 29, 2007 and departure on August 4, 2007).

Parking passes may be purchased at the residence hall front desk at a cost of approximately $3.50 per day. It should be noted that the parking is located on North Campus. Convenient and complimentary University bus service to and from the parking lot is provided.

Reservations for Cambridge House or Couzens Hall space may be made on-line at http://conferences.housing.umich.edu/housing/couzens/. If requesting a double room, please be prepared to give the names of both guests upon making the reservation. The room will be billed to one guest. There is an additional one-time administrative fee of $3.00 per person for UM sponsored groups. Credit card information is needed when making your reservation.

VI. EXCURSIONS

Walking Tour of University of Michigan Campus
Sunday, July 29, 2007
On the opening day of the Congress there will be a free walking tour of the University of Michigan central campus for anyone interested in participating. The tour, given in English only, will highlight some of the history of the University of Michigan and the buildings that make up central campus. Interested persons should meet meet in front of the fountain outside the west entrance of the Michigan League at 2:00 pm. The tour will take approximately 1 hour and will end in time for the opening of the Congress office at 3:00 pm.

There is no charge for this tour.

Greenfield Village

Greenfield Village is one of five attractions that make up The Henry Ford – a history destination that brings the American Experience to life. Spread over more than 90-acres, Greenfield Village comes alive with the unforgettable sights, sounds and settings of America’s past. Here you will be able to see Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park laboratory, Orville and Wilbur Wright’s Cycle Shop, the birthplace of Henry Ford and many other buildings which tell the story of America’s past. Greenfield Village is located 33 miles east of Ann Arbor in Dearborn, Michigan.

The motorcoach will leave Ann Arbor from the Rackham Building at 1:00 pm. You will receive your admission ticket to Greenfield Village as you board the motorcoach. The motorcoach will arrive at Greenfield Village at approximately 1:45 pm and you will have until 5:00 pm to explore the Village on your own. The motorcoach will depart Greenfield Village at 5:15 pm and return to Ann Arbor at 6:00 pm. Drop-off will also be at the Rackham Building.

The cost of the excursion includes motorcoach transportation to and from Greenfield Village and a single adult admission ticket to Greenfield Village (does not include admission to other attractions at The Henry Ford).

Post Congress Excursion to Chicago & the Oriental Institute
August 4 – 7, 2007
Please join us for a trip to the Windy City and the Oriental Institute! Chicago is a vibrant city well-known for its museums, architecture, shopping and dining. Our tour will include a sightseeing tour of the major attractions and a trip to the Field Museum as well as some free time to allow you to explore the city on your own. The Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago is a leading center in ancient Near Eastern studies, sponsoring fieldwork throughout the Near East. The Institute also has a large publications program, notably including the Chicago Demotic Dictionary and the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary. We will visit the Institute for a reception and dinner on August 5.

We will depart Ann Arbor on August 4 and travel to Chicago via motorcoach. We plan to arrive in Chicago at approximately 6:30 PM (CST – Chicago is in the Central Standard Time Zone so they are one hour behind Ann Arbor time). Guests will stay at the Hilton Garden Inn in the heart of downtown.

AAA Conference Solutions is our travel agent for this excursion. The excursion price is $650.00 per person. This includes round trip motorcoach transportation from Ann Arbor to Chicago, 3 nights double occupancy hotel accommodation at the Hilton Garden Inn including sales tax and bell service, transportation to and from the Field Museum and Oriental Institute, boxed lunch at the Field Museum, a guided motorcoach sightseeing tour of Chicago, an on-site representative from AAA Travel, and dinner in Greektown.
