University Reserves: How do I find reserves

University Reserves

How Do I Find Things on Reserve?

Physical reserves (also called traditional reserves) includes books and coursepacks that you can physically check out from a circulation desk.

Electronic reserves are for smaller things, like book chapters or individual journal articles or sample exams.

BORROWING RESERVES MATERIALS

University Reserves Circulation is located on the first floor in the lobby of the Shapiro Building. Reserve items are in a "closed stacks" area, which means a circulation assistant will retrieve the item(s) for you. You may borrow two (2) reserve items at a time.

Reserve materials are shelved by call number. You can get the call number by searching course reserves in MIRLYN. You can search in several ways, such as by the title of the item you want to check out, or by your professor's name (to see everything that is on reserve for your course). For step-by-step instructions with screen shots, please see "Detailed Directions for Searching Course Reserves in MIRLYN."

Then:

  1. Fill out a slip (available at the circulation desk) with the call number of the item(s) wanted
  2. Give the paper slip to the desk assistant at the Circulation Desk, who will then retrieve the item for you
  3. Check the book out using a valid library card (your M-Card); or read the book behind the desk

FINDING ELECTRONIC RESERVES

You can find the link to electronic reserves by searching MIRLYN. Search by your course or instructor's name in order to see a full list of everything on reserve. You should see "Electronic Reserves for [name of course] - [term and year]" (example: Electronic Reserves for EEB 455 - Ethnobotany - Spring 2005).

Click on this link; in the full record that appears, then click on the URL. You need to authenticate, but then you will see a list of readings.

For step-by-step instructions with screen shots, please see " Detailed Directions for Searching Course Reseres in MIRLYN."

As an alternative, you can start with the main University Reserves web-page and click on "Electronic Reserves Only." This takes you to a list of reserves by term; select the term in question and scan the list for your course.

Course materials are sorted by class name. At the bottom of that page, there is a link to the same list sorted by instructor's last name.

For more information on how to find items on reserve, you can go to the "Problems with Finding Items" part of the Having Problems with Course Reserves? page.
