Explore Detroit through maps and other cartographic materials. Celebrate the rich history of the Motor City and peruse everything from detailed Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps from the early 20th century to tourist maps; from pictorial maps to the 1950 master plan of the city. See if you can spot your favorite places to visit or discover new treasures, and try your hand at drawing a map of Detroit yourself!

Join us (on the 2nd floor of Hatcher) for Third Thursdays at the Library, a themed monthly open house where we share materials from our collections.

While you’re here, pick up a Third Thursday Passport and collect a stamp from each of the three Third Thursday Open Houses — the Clark Library, International Studies, and Special Collections Research Center — to win a prize.

Dreamy image of Detroit in colors, with bodies of water in prominent red shapes, highly populated areas as yellow splotches surrounded by green, and the rest in variations of blue and purple.
