About me

Julie was born in Denmark and educated as a book, paper and photography conservator at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. Immediately before coming to the University of Michigan, she also obtained a degree in Applied Museum and Heritage Studies from the Amsterdam University of Arts, The Netherlands. At U-M, Julie will undertake the complete conservation of the university’s Dutch tracts, a historically important collection of printed pamphlets from the Low Countries of the 15th to 19th centuries. As part of this project, the tracts will also be digitized for the benefit of scholars and interested public who are not able to study these tracts in person. Apart from the day-to-day conservation work, one of Julie’s major interests is how the considerations of the exact, numerical conservation science can be integrated with the more shifting and subjective values assigned to heritage by the people surrounding it; and how collections and archives can be made more accessible to a wide range of users.
