About

Jan (Janice Bluestein) Longone is Adjunct Curator of the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. She works closely with Curator Juli McLoone to continue adding to this important collection of culinary history.

Background

In 2000 Jan and her husband, Dan Longone, now Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, began donating their extensive culinary archive to the University of Michigan to form the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive (JBLCA). It consists of more than 30,000 items, including cookbooks, culinary manuscripts, menus, journals, and ephemera.

Jan has curated more than 16 major international exhibitions and symposia, was a founding member of the American Institute of Wine and Food (AIWF) and served on its board of directors as well as on the editorial board of Gastronimica. She was awarded the Food Arts Silver Spoon in 2001 for her work in uncovering and preserving American Culinary History; in 2011 the Culinary Historians of New York honored her with the Amelia Award for Lifetime Achievement in Culinary History. In 2018, she was honored with the Carol DeMasters Service to Food Journalism Award by the Association of Food Journalists.
