Health and health care policy
Description

Guide to U.S. Health and Health Care Policy provides the analytical connections showing students how issues and actions are translated into public policies and institutions for resolving or managing healthcare issues and crises. The Guide highlights the decision-making cycle that requires the cooperation of government, business, and an informed citizenry in order to achieve a comprehensive approach to advancing the nation's healthcare policies. 30 topical essays investigate the fundamental political, social, economic, and procedural initiatives that drive health and health care policy decisions affecting Americans at the local, regional, and national levels. Central themes include providing access to healthcare, national and international intervention, nutrition and health, human and financial resource allocation, freedom of religion versus public policy, discrimination and healthcare policy, universal healthcare coverage, private healthcare versus publicly funded healthcare, and the immediate and long-term costs associated with disease prevention, treatment, and health maintenance. Edited by Thomas R. Oliver.

Encyclopedia of Transportation: Social Science and Policy

Description

Viewing transportation through the lens of current social, economic, and policy aspects, this four-volume reference work explores the topic of transportation across multiple disciplines within the social sciences and related areas, including geography, public policy, business, and economics. The book's articles seek to answer such questions as: What has been the legacy, not just economically but politically and socially as well, of President Eisenhower's modern interstate highway system in America? With that system and the infrastructure that supports it now in a state of decline and decay, what's the best path for the future at a time of enormous fiscal constraints? Should California politicians plunge ahead with plans for a high-speed rail that every expert says—despite the allure—will go largely unused and will never pay back the massive investment while at this very moment potholes go unfilled all across the state? What path is best for emerging countries to keep pace with dramatic economic growth for their part? What are the social and financial costs of gridlock in our cities?

Features: Approximately 675 signed articles are arranged in A-to-Z fashion and conclude with Further Readings and cross references.  A Chronology helps put individual events into historical context.  A Reader's Guide organizes entries by broad topical or thematic areas; a detailed index helps users quickly locate entries of most immediate interest; and a Resource Guide provides a list of journals, books, and associations and their websites.; While articles were written to avoid jargon as much as possible, a Glossary provides quick definitions of technical terms.  Encyclopedia of Transportation covers issues that surround transportation in the United States and around the world. Key Themes: Administration, Operations, and Evaluation; Air Transportation Systems; Economics of Transportation; Energy, Environmental, and; Health Impacts; Facilities and Infrastructure; Intermodal Transportation Systems; International Transportation and Policy; Labor Issues/Employee Relations; Planning and Policy; Safety and Security; Social Issues in Transportation; Surface Transportation Systems; Technology, Design, and Engineering; Transportation, Finance of; Transportation Legislation; Transportation Modeling; Transportation Organizations and Agencies; Travel Behavior and Research; Water Transportation Systems.

Encyclopedia of Social Media & Politics
Description

The Encyclopedia of Social Media and Politics explores how the rise of social media is altering politics both in the United States and in key moments, movements, and places around the world. Its scope encompasses the disruptive technologies and activities that are changing basic patterns in American politics and the amazing transformations that social media use is rendering in other political systems heretofore resistant to democratization and change.  It reflects the changing landscape of politics where old modes and methods of political communication from elites to the masses (top down) and from the masses to elites (bottom up) are being displaced rapidly by social media, and where activists are building new movements and protests using social media to alter mainstream political agendas.

Key Features This three-volume A-to-Z encyclopedia set includes 600 short essays  that explore social media's impact on politics, such as “Activists and Activism,” “Issues and Social Media,” “Politics and Social Media,” and “Popular Uprisings and Protest.”  It includes a detailed appendix with material  tracking and illustrating social media usage by U.S. Senators and Congressmen.
