Gloryland is the fictional memoir of a buffalo soldier--a black U.S. cavalryman and the son of slaves--who finds true freedom when he is posted to patrol the newly created Yosemite National Park in 1903.

Author and U-M alumnus Shelton Johnson introduced Oprah Winfrey to Yosemite during her first visit to the park on the Oprah Winfrey Show, gained nationwide visibility for his role in the Ken Burns documentary The National Parks: America's Best Idea, and has worked in Yosemite for the past 15 of his 22 years in the Park Service. Kristin Hass is an Associate Professor of American Culture at the University of Michigan.
