Join us for a panel discussion and refreshments for the opening of the Strengths of Refugees and their Community exhibit.
Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.
Speakers:
Andrea Belgrade, PhD candidate, Psychology
Dr. Odessa Gonzalez Benson, Assistant Professor, Social Work
Ayah Kutmah, Co-Founder of REvive
Dr. Mari Kira, Research Scientist, Psychology
Dilli Gautam, MPH, President of the Bhutanese Community of Michigan
This project was supported by UM Library Mini Grant and SPSSI Grants in Aid
We will also be collecting donations to support local refugees through Washtenaw Refugee Welcome, JFS, and REvive. The following donations are most useful:
— Supplies for newborns like diapers, wipes, and gentle laundry soap
— Staples like toilet paper, hand soaps, and paper towels
— Test-prep books (TOEFL, SAT, ACT, LSAT, etc.)
— School supplies like paper, pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, highlighters, white out tape, and 3x5 cards
— Personal care items like deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, body lotion, hairbrushes, hair ties, manicure supplies, razors, shampoo, conditioner, soap, face cleanser, and face moisturizer
