Thomas Gage Papers

  • Granting agency: National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
  • Timeline: 2021-2024
  • Collaborators: William L. Clements Library and Digital Content & Collections
  • Description: Digitize the papers of British General Thomas Gage (1718/19-1787). Thomas Gage was a career military officer, who served in North America during the Seven Years' War, as military governor of Montreal (1760-1763), as commander in chief of the British Army in North America (1763-1775), and as governor of Massachusetts Bay (1774-1775). General Gage's extensive papers comprise approximately 23,010 letters, documents, financial papers, maps, and broadsides, largely dating from his service in North America between 1763 and 1775. The resulting digital collection will include approximately 23,010 documents and will be freely available to anyone with an Internet connection.

Sounding Spirit Digital Library

  • Granting agency: National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
  • Timeline: 2020-2023
  • Collaborators: William L. Clements Library, Special Collections Research Center, and Digital Content & Collections
  • Description: Digitized around 50 volumes from both the William L. Clements Library and the Special Collections Research Center and made those available in the HathiTrust Digital Library. The grant expands the Sounding Spirit digital library to include 1,284 additional books of vernacular sacred music from the US South published between 1850 and 1925, and complement Sounding Spirit’s annotated facsimile editions of five influential books of sacred southern vernacular music.

Digitizing Natural History Materials from University of Michigan’s Special Collections

  • Granting agency: Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR)
  • Timeline: 2020-2022
  • Collaborators: HS-STEM and Digital Content & Collections
  • Description: Digitized 1,300 rare, previously-unavailable-online works from the U-M Museums of Zoology, Paleontology, and Anthropological Archaeology, as well as the University Herbarium and U-M Library's special collections and made those works available to the biodiversity research community in the HathiTrust Digital Library and the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL).

The Edison Collection of American Sheet Music, 1800-1870

  • Timeline: 2016-2018
  • Collaborators: U-M Library Music Library and Digital Content & Collections
  • Description: Digitized approximately 37,000 pieces of late 19th and early 20th CCE sheet music collected by Thomas Edison and make the sheet music available in the HathiTrust Digital Library.

Collaboration in Cataloging: Islamic Manuscripts at Michigan

  • Granting agency: Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR)
  • Timeline: 2008-2010
  • Collaborators: Special Collections Research Center and Digital Content & Collections
  • Description: Creation and exposure of digital surrogates and catalog records for collaborative cataloging. Digitized approximately 1,030 manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish dating from the 8th century AD to the 20th and made the manuscripts available in the HathiTrust Digital Library. We continue to digitize and add manuscripts to HathiTrust, as they are acquired.
