About
Global Publics, a series of the University of Michigan International Institute.
Established under the authority of the Regents of the University of Michigan on September 24, 1993, the International Institute is responsible for coordination of research and training in area, comparative, and international studies within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, as well as promotion of innovative collaborations in international affairs across the University of Michiganʼs schools and colleges.
The International Institute comprises one of the nationʼs broadest assemblages of interdisciplinary centers and initiatives, including the Universityʼs U.S. Department of Education-supported National Resource Centers in area studies and international business; other area studies, comparative and thematic programs and initiatives; publications; and the Office of International Programs, which organizes undergraduate study abroad and exchange programs.
Operating under the oversight of a Steering Committee and in consultation with a Directorsʼ Committee, the International Institute manages funds for the support of student training and faculty research in area, comparative, and international studies. It advises the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts about faculty positions dedicated to area studies within the College and supports the recruitment of tenured, tenure-track, and visiting faculty who help advance the Universityʼs international and interdisciplinary scholarly missions.
