The First World War Centenary is being observed from 2014 to 2018. An immense archive associated with the Great War is online, and we will periodically highlight some of the visual resources. Any researcher will be well-rewarded by a visit to the websites of the national libraries of the various combatant nations, most of which have digitized holdings related to the war.
The National Library of Scotland's Digital Gallery presents several curated collections, including "Experiences of the Great War", "First World War 'Official Photographs'", and "Rolls of honour". The last are digitally scanned books "containing listings of casualties and those who died while on active service. Includes rolls for organisations, such as schools, universities, clans, businesses and churches, as well as for places all over Scotland." Title pages, such as the example above, range from beautifully designed to stark images. The interior pages, as in the image below, tell a grim story.
