Special Collections is pleased to announce the opening of The Life and Times of Lizzy Bennet, a new exhibit in the Audubon Room. This exhibit commemorates the bicentennial of Jane Austen’s death by exploring the historical context in which her characters lived. Highlighting the considerable social and political change of the 1790s through the 1810s in Great Britain - including shifting norms in the ballroom, the Napoleonic Wars, and the fight to abolish the slave trade - this exhibit draws on the holdings of the Special Collections Library, the Clark Library, and the private collection of James Ravin to offer a deeper understanding of both Austen’s novels and the Georgian World.

Join us for the opening celebration next week on Thursday, November 30th, 4:00-6:00pm in the Hatcher Gallery. Light refreshments will be served at 4:00pm and curators Juli McLoone and Sigrid Cordell will begin their lecture at 4:30pm.

Additionally, please explore the upcoming events planned in association with this exhibit, listed below. If you would like to arrange a tour or related instruction session for a class, please contact Juli McLoone (jmcloone@umich.edu) or Sigrid Anderson Cordell (scordell@umich.edu).

Is the exhibit opening from 4:30 to 6:00 or from 4:00 to 5:30? The page on the library's website says 4:00 to 5:30: https://www.lib.umich.edu/events/exhibit-opening-life-and-times-lizzy-bennet

Sorry for the confusion! The Gallery will open with light refreshments served at 4:00pm, so that people will have time to trickle in and view the exhibit. The lecture will begin at 4:30pm.
