Get your Halloween on with these international horror films

October 14, 2020

In lieu of our annual onsite Halloween spectacular — the International Studies Horror Filmfest —  we’re offering a list of streaming movies to watch at your leisure. Line up some snacks and settle in for a scare!

Most of these movies are available through the Kanopy streaming movie service. Log in with your U-M credentials to watch critically-acclaimed movies, inspiring documentaries, award-winning foreign films, and more.

The horror

These frightening foreign-language movies from around the world are all subtitled in English.

  • A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night — Farsi — vampire film from Iran
  • A Tale of Two Sisters — Korean — horror from South Korea
  • Midsommar — English & Swedish — very intense recent horror film set in both the U.S. and Sweden. Be very afraid!
  • Suspiria — English — the original, not the remake! Directed by the Italian horror master Dario Argento
  • What We Do in the Shadows — English — this delightful vampire comedy set in New Zealand was shown at a previous Horrorfest, and it’s spawned a series!

The lighter side

If you don’t like horror films, we recommend these light international films. All are subtitled in English.
