When does timeliness matter to your paper?

You wouldn't want to write a paper about war in Afghanistan based solely on sources written before September 11, 2001. Those sources might be perfectly correct and valid and scholarly, but they would not include information on the most recent conflict.
What about Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise? Could you write about either of them using sources that are only a year or two old? Even such recent articles would miss the fact that the celebrity couple divorced in August 2001.

Some academic fields might not change very often, and some might change every day, but it's always good to know whether or not your information is up-to-date.
