Foreign Language Research

Challenge:

Find magazine, journal and newspaper articles in a foreign language.

Solution:

You can either browse for articles at the library or search for articles online.

Browsing for any article: The UGL subscribes to Paris Match and Der Spiegel, both of which can be found on the Periodical Shelves in alphabetical order by title. The Graduate Library subscribes to many foreign language newspapers. They can be found in the Serials and Microforms Room on 2 South of Hatcher Graduate Library. If you want to know if UM subscribes to a particular publication, do a title search in Mirlyn.

Finding articles on a topic online: There are a number of databases that index non-English publications. They can all be found through SearchTools.

• LexisNexis Academic
  LexisNexis is a full-text database.
  Select "Guided News Search". Under "Step One" - Select a news category: Choose a) Non-English Language News or b) World News.
  
  Under "Step Two"- Select a news source: If you selected Non-English Language News in Step One, then choose a language. You may search Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. If you selected World News, then choose a world region. You may search North/South American News Sources, European News Sources, Asia/Pacific News Sources, or Middle East/Africa Sources.
  
  
• Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI)
  HAPI provides citations drawn from more than 400 journals, primarily in Spanish or English, which cover Latin America, the Caribbean, and Hispanics in the U.S. Some full-text is available. For those items without full-text, search the publication title in Mirlyn.
  


• FRANCIS
  Provides indexing and abstracts for European-language journal articles and books in the humanities and social sciences, especially religion, history of art, literature and economics.

  Provides links to many different media, both US and international.
  
  
• Hatcher Graduate Library Near Eastern Studies Page
  A comprehensive list of websites, print materials and on-campus collections of Near Eastern studies resources. Be sure to look under the "web resources" section.



• NewsBank
  Full text of over 600 US newspapers and over 260 English language newspapers from other countries worldwide, plus indices of translated international news publications and broadcasts.



• Middle East Media Guide
  A list of newspapers published in the Middle East, sorted by country, language and frequency of publication.
  


• University of Wisconsin Library's Guide to Islamic North Africa and the Middle East
  Electronic newspapers and journals from the Middle East and several African countries.
