The Peer Information Counseling Program

Our Mission

Staffed by a diverse group of undergraduate students, PIC is an academic support program designed to help University of Michigan students make effective use of the the many resources provided by the University Library. The primary mission of PIC is to help students access and manage information more effectively, supporting the goal of helping students to garner a more successful academic experience.

Our Counselors

Peer Information Counselors usually are hired starting in their 2nd or 3rd year as undergraduates. Training lasts approximately one semester. Initially, counselors observe library staff at the reference desk before actually assisting. They work a minimum of four (4) hours per week, to a maximum of eight (8) hours. Counselors are trained in six areas:

a. Orientation to the Library
b. Catalog searching
c. Database searching (selection of 5-6 databases)
d. Print reference book sources
e. Overview of research process and the reference interview
f. Evaluation of information sources
