Becoming a Partner, General Information
The Evans-Text Creation Partnership is working with Readex to enhance the Evans image product by creating and offering accurately keyed, tagged, and searchable texts that link directly to corresponding Evans page images. The project, however, is not a Readex"product" nor sold directly by Readex. To join Text Creation Partnership, and become a co-owner of the Evans-TCP text file, a library must first have access to the Evans images through Readex, and then contract for partner status through the University of Michigan University Library.
Evans-TCP Partner libraries are co-owners of the textfile that includes thousands of accurately keyboarded and SGML/XML encoded texts selected from the larger Evans corpus. As a co-owner, a Partner library has the right to locally load and manage the file, integrate it with other resources, and convey to its authenticated users the right to reuse the files in their entirety for research and instructional purposes. After a contractually agreed upon date, the rights of partnership also permits Partner libraries to distribute the text file beyond its campus community to support other constituencies to whom the Partner seeks to provide service (e.g., alumni, high school students, state residents, or the world at large).
It is the intention of the Evans-TCP structure to create a standards-based resource of enduring value to which the library community can claim full rights of ownership, and maintain broader community access under the doctrine of "public domain."

*Charter TCP members are institutions supporting EEBO-TCP. Fees from that initiative have been used to support programming, interface design, development of keyboarding guidelines and a DTD, legal work, a keyboarding RFP and vendor training, concept marketing, and other aspects of infrastructure development. Differential pricing for Evans-TCP is predicated on the assumption that Evans-only libraries benefit from these Evans expenditures and should contribute to them in retrospect.
Payment: Evans-TCP fees are payable to the University of Michigan, or it's fiscal agent for the Evans-TCP project. Partnership fees are directed to cover the costs of text conversion including keyboarding and SGML tagging, quality assurance, programming, and systems management. As a Text Creation Partner, Newsbank/Readex contributes funds to the project, a portion being applied to the costs of partner recruitment, user support, and project dissemination.
