The Satire of the Three Estates, a farcical, satirical, and allegorical morality play, is David Lindsay's acknowledged masterpiece, and one of the chief monuments of Middle Scots literature. It stands apart from Lindsay's other poetry more in its boldness of conception, occasional coarseness of humor, and variety of meter than in its themes, which, as in his other work, prominently featured complaints against social injustice, appeals for good government, and (above all) a propensity to blame the Church for much that had gone wrong in Scotland.
