Thomas A. Edison Papers

Alternative Titles
ProQuest History Vault, American politics and society
Description

This collection is broken into the Thomas A. Edison papers, parts 1-5 covering 1850-1919, along with a collection of Motion Picture Catalogs by American Producers and Distributors, 1894-1908.

All 5 parts of the Thomas A. Edison papers include lab notebooks, correspondence, and other papers and all are from the Thomas Edison National Historical Park (ENHP) in West Orange, New Jersey. Covering Edison's work on the incandescent light bulb to his marriage to Mina Miller Edison to the consolidation of the National Phonograph Company, these papers provide comprehensive access to the life and work of Edison as inventor, businessman, scientist, and entrepreneur.

The Motion Picture Catalogs collection consists of 6,000 pages of American motion picture catalogs published between 1894 and 1908. The earliest documents were those printed in 1894 by sales agents for Thomas Edison's kinetoscope. The catalogs that were distributed between 1894 and 1908 advertised films, equipment, and related posters, slides, lectures, and phonographs. They ranged from complete multi-page listings of a distributor's stock to one-page synopses of a production company's latest product. After more than a century, a comparatively small number of such catalogs remain. Some are fragmentary or incomplete; most are unique; and all are fragile. In a few cases only photocopies of the originals survive. This collection includes all known catalogs distributed in the United States by U.S. producers, by European producers through their U.S. offices, and by domestic agents for U.S. and European films, and focuses on films that received significant distribution in the United States.

DMP Review Service (CoE)

This service will support the development of strong, effective data management plans (DMPs) by College of Engineering researchers.

DMPs authored by U-M College of Engineering researchers can be submitted to the service for review by sending them via email to enginDMPhelp@umich.edu. Please include the following information with your DMP submission:

  • A short description of the project or the method
  • The agency and directorate and/or division you are applying to
  • The official title, proposal approval form (PAF) number and sponsor deadline of the grant

Who will review my DMP?

A librarian and an IT person will review your DMP. Someone from the Associate Dean for Research Office  may also review your DMP if the librarian or IT reviewer have questions that they need help with.

How will the review be conducted?

When a DMP is received, it is uploaded into Google Drive and shared with the specific people who will be reviewing the DMP, as well as whomever submits the DMP. The comment feature will be used to leave comments in the document. The document itself will not be edited by the reviewers, although the reviewers may provide suggested language in their comments. You will be notified via email once all reviews are finished.

What is the turnaround time?

For now, the service is guaranteeing a 10-business day turnaround time for a first review. Overall time may extend longer than that based on how many questions the reviewers have and how quickly the DMP submitter responds to those questions.

I have additional questions.

You can email your questions about the service to enginDMPhelp@umich.edu. For guidance on how to write a DMP, please visit the Data Management Plan Research Guide.
