"Pishu 皮书": China Economy, Public Policy, and Security Database

Description

'Pishu' (皮书, which literally means ‘cover-books’) are high-value analytical reports intended to guide policymaking in the People’s Republic of China. Pishu are published by the prestigious Social Sciences Academic Press, a branch of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. These reports feature exclusive research and analysis by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and authors from similar institutions, and present objective analysis versus official government messaging on strategic issues. In China, Pishu are consumed by think tanks and top policymakers. Covered topics include a variety of issues of importance to China's government and research community, including international relations, agricultural policy, and industry competitiveness. They may be considered somewhat analagous to United States Congressional Research Service reports and analysis reports published by the RAND Corporation.

Cold War Intelligence Online: The Secret War Between the U.S. and the USSR, 1945-1991

Description

This collection of 2,360 formerly classified U.S. government documents (most of them classified Top Secret or higher) provides readers for the first time with the declassified documentary record about the successes and failures of the U.S. intelligence community in its efforts to spy on the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Documents included comprise 21,700 pages and were obtained from archival sources as well as through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, submitted to more than two dozen U.S. government agencies. A substantial portion of these documents have been released only since January 2012.

More than half of the documents were obtained from various record groups held by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Many of the other documents were obtained from the Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan Presidential Libraries. The collection also includes a series of documents on joint U.S.-British intelligence operations, obtained from the National Archives of the United Kingdom. Additional sources include the CIA's CREST database, the Hoover Institution Archives, the Library of Congress, the George C. Marshall Research Library, and the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial Library.

Description

Since 1945, the U.S. intelligence community has had to cover a half-dozen major wars and several dozen smaller but equally bloody armed conflicts in the Middle East, as well as innumerable civil wars, border clashes, armed insurgencies, and terrorist attacks. This comprehensive document set sheds light on the U.S. intelligence community’s spying and analytic efforts in the Arab world, including the Middle East, the Near East, and North Africa. It covers the time period from the end of World War II to the present day, up until the 2002-2003 Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) assessments, the Global War on Terror, the Iraq War, and Iran’s nuclear program.
