English Language and Literature

The Dictionary of Old English Web Corpus is an online database consisting of at least one copy of every surviving Old English text. In some cases, more than one copy is included, if it is significant because of dialect or date. As such, the DOE Web Corpus represents over three million words of Old English and fewer than a million words of Latin, or almost five times the collected works of Shakespeare. Compiled as part of the Dictionary of Old English project at the University of Toronto, the texts in the Corpus are XML-encoded and are fully conformant with the Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines (TEI-P5 2007). The interface for the Dictionary of Old English Web Corpus was developed by the Humanities Text Initiative at the University of Michigan.

This database contains modern and contemporary American poetry from the early twentieth century to the present. It includes the works of most major poets of the twentieth century, beginning with the traditionalists, continuing through the American modernists represented by such poets as Wallace Stevens, and moving onward to the contemporary poetry of America's 1990s. The broad coverage of Twentieth-Century American Poetry includes collected works and individual volumes of poetry from all of the major movements and schools of twentieth-century American poetry, including modernism, the New York School, the Chicago School, the Southern School, the Confessionals, the Beats and the Black Mountain poets.

This database of modern and contemporary African American poetry includes collected poems and individual volumes from all the major movements and schools of twentieth century African American poetry from 1902 to the present day.

This database contains the full-text of 54 African-American poets writing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and, through their writings, provides a unique portrait of early America.

The original electronic text for this version of the Bible was provided by the Oxford Text Archive. Original tagging was performed by the New Centre for the Oxford English Dictionary (Waterloo). Subsequent conversion to SGML was performed by the University of Michigan Humanities Text Initiative.

This database contains twenty-one different versions of the English Bible, including thirteen complete Bibles, five texts that comprise New Testaments only, and William Tyndale's translation of the Pentateuch, Jonah, and New Testament.

Provides full-text access to the archives of core scholarly journals in the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences. Includes content from ten of the eleven JSTOR multi-disciplinary Journals Archives Collections (Arts & Sciences I through IX; and Life Sciences) and nearly all of the JSTOR discipline-specific Journals Archives Collections (Biological Sciences, Business I and II, Ecology & Botany, Health & General Sciences, Language & Literature, Mathematics & Statistics, and Music).

In addition, JSTOR now also includes the full text of current issues (up to the latest issue) for selected journals from selected publishers, including the University of Chicago Press.

Please note: U-M does not currently have access to the following JSTOR Journals Archives Collections: Arts & Sciences X (ten); Ireland; and Business III.

Dates of coverage vary by journal title. All go back to the very first issue published, but most have a "moving wall" embargo that excludes issues from the most recent X years (where X can be anywhere from 0 up to 10 years, depending on the particular journal; most are in the 3 to 5 year embargo range).
