Dissertations & Theses @ CIC Institutions (Big Ten Universities)

Dissertation Abstracts, Diss. Abs., Diss Abs
Description

ProQuest/UMI's database of dissertations from 14 of the 16 universities in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) consortium (12* of the 14 members of the Big Ten athletic conference, plus the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago). A subset of the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses database with full-text of most** dissertations from these 14 CIC/Big Ten universities (including University of Michigan dissertations) filed since 1997, and descriptions of nearly all dissertations and selected master theses filed at these universities since their foundings. Includes abstracts written by the authors for dissertations from 1980 to the present.

*Dissertations from the 2 newest members of the Big Ten, Rutgers University and the University of Maryland, are not yet included.

**Two factors cause a certain percentage of dissertations from these 14 universities not to be included:

1) Increasingly, universities are requiring that doctoral degree candidates deposit their dissertations into the university's online repository, and are changing submission to ProQuest from a requirement to an option.  For example, as of 2012, University of Michigan requires deposit of dissertations into its Deep Blue online repository, and no longer requires submission to ProQuest.  To the extent that authors elect not to submit their dissertations to ProQuest, its listings for dissertations are becoming gradually less complete over time.  (Its listings for dissertations filed at U-M have declined from being about 80% complete for 2012 to only about 25% to 20% complete for 2013 and 2014, respectively.)

2) Authors of dissertations have the right to restrict access to the full text of their dissertation from all ProQuest databases and document delivery services if they so choose.  Some publishers recommend or require blocking of access to the full text of a dissertation as a condition of publishing a revised version of a dissertation as a scholarly book.  If access to a dissertation listed in ProQuest has been restricted by the author, a notification of this appears in the full record display, to the right, above the MGet It button.

Sociological Abstracts

Alternative Titles
Soc Abs, Soc Abstracts
Sociologicalabstracts
SocioFile, Socio File
ProQuest Sociological Abstracts
Description

Sociological Abstracts abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. The database provides abstracts of journal articles and citations to book reviews drawn from over 1,800 serials publications, and also provides abstracts of books, book chapters, dissertations, and conference papers. Many records from key journals in sociology, added to the database since 2002, also include the references cited in the bibliography of the source article.

Each individual reference may also have links to an abstract and/or to other papers that cite that reference; these links increase the possibility of finding more potentially relevant articles. These references are linked both within Sociological Abstracts and across other social science databases available on ProQuest.

Updated monthly, with approximately 30,000 records added per year. (Description from the publisher's website.)
