World Integrated Trade Solution (WITS)

Alternative Titles
UNCTAD TRAINS, UN COMTRADE, WITS
Description

World integrated Trade Solutions (WITS) gives access to international merchandise trade and protection related data and offers built-in analytical tools allowing users to assess the impact of tariff changes. WITS provide users with capabilities to retrieve and analyze trade and tariff data; convert data between different nomenclatures; customize country and product groups; and download data. WITS also includes simulation tool to calculate the impact of tariff changes on trade flows (trade creation and diversion), tariff revenues, and consumer welfare using partial equilibrium modeling tools.

The World Bank, in close collaboration and consultation with the various International Organizations such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), International Trade Center (ITC), United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), has developed the World Integrated Trade Solution (WITS). This software accesses and retrieves information on trade and tariffs which is compiled by the following international organizations:

  • The United Nation Statistics Division (UNSD) Commodity Trade (UN COMTRADE) Data Base contains merchandise trade exports and imports by detailed commodity and partner country. Values are recorded in US dollars along with a variety of quantity measures. The Database includes information for over 170 countries, some of which have been reporting these types of statistics to the United Nations since 1962.The data are recorded according to various internationally recognized trade and tariff classifications.

  • The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Trade Analysis Information System (TRAINS) contains information on Imports, Tariffs, Para-Tariffs and Non-Tariff Measures for 119 countries. The data on tariffs, para-tariffs and non-tariff measures are available at the most detailed commodity level of the national tariffs (i.e., at the tariff line level). The data are recorded according to three internationally recognized trade and tariff classifications.

  • The World Trade Organization's (WTO) Integrated Data Base (IDB) contains imports by commodity and partner country and MFN applied and where available preferencial tariffs, at the most detailed commodity level of the national tariffs. the Consolidated Tariff Schedule Data Base (CTS) contains WTO bound tariffs, Initial Negotiating Rights (INR) and other indicators. The CTS reflects the concessions made by countries during goods negotiations (e.g., the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations). The IDB and CTS are practical working tools and there are no implications as to the legal status of the information contained therein.

Landscan

Description

The LandScan Global Population Databases, developed at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, represent resolution global population distribution databases available. This is a geographically based, population distribution model.

LandScan is a global population database that shows geographical distribution of population at one-kilometer resolution over an average 24 hour period.

The LandScan algorithm uses spatial data and imagery analysis technologies and the most up-to-date census data within an administrative boundary. Accurate administrative boundaries are an integral part of the LandScan population distribution modeling process. These population distribution models are tailored to match the data conditions and geographical nature of each individual country and region.

Most national censuses count populations by measuring where people sleep (or reside) rather than where they work or travel. LandScan integrates daytime movements and collective travel habits into a single measure to produce a better representation of where people are located during an average day.

With improvements added this year, high-resolution imagery sources were used extensively for validation to refine urban areas, land cover data, and thousands of smaller villages and populated places.

GIS users can access these data directly from GIS via:
