Images and Videos

A database of distribution sources for educational media on videotape, film, audiocassette, and other formats. It contains over 350,000 descriptions of videotapes, 16mm films, audio-tapes, filmstrips, slide sets, transparencies and film cartridges of an educational, documentary or informational nature. Compiled by the National Information Center for Educational Media (NICEM), with records from the Library of Congress, publishers' catalogs, & library collections.

Access Surgery is an integrated online resource that provides medical students, surgical residents, and practicing surgeons with quick answers to surgical inquiries. Organized around the ACGME's (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) mandate for a Core Curriculum, AccessSurgery delivers surgical textbooks, videos, drug monographs, differential diagnoses tool, and board review tests.

The Visual History Archive contains 52,000 digitized video interviews with holocaust survivors. Interviewees are primarily Jewish Survivors, though the archive also includes interviews with gay/lesbian, Jehovah's Witness, and Roma (Gypsy) survivors, liberators and Nuremberg trial participants. The interviews were conducted in 56 different countries, in 32 different languages and is the most extensive resource of its type. Each interview is fully indexed and allows a viewer to search for relevant portions of interviews.

The Visual History Archive is only accessible on the UM Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses. If you are off campus, please see the USC Shoah Foundation Institute Visual History Archive Online (www.lib.umich.edu/database/link/995241) which allows searching of the full database and access to a small number of sample testimonies in English.

Online interactive version (with linked citations, digital images, and full video and sound) of the Birds of North America, the definitive US scientific reference on the 700+ breeding birds of North America. First housed at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, BNA was initiated as an 18-volume print reference in the early 1990's under the guidance of the American Ornithologists Union and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Searchable by species, topic, or keyword. Each species account covers the life details, behaviors, migration information, maps of breeding and wintering ranges, all habitat descriptions, and conservation and management guidelines. All information is regularly updated with the latest research findings from the leading researchers for each species. Uses streaming RealPlayer for audio (bird songs and calls) and QuickTime for video.

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is an online database of information about movies, movie stars, television shows, television stars and video games.

The National Film Registry is the registry of films selected by the United States National Film Preservation Board for preservation in the Library of Congress.

The collection includes nightly news programs broadcast by the national television networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) since August 5, 1968, and a daily news program from CNN since 1995. Archive staff write abstracts of each story within a regular news program, which are fully searchable in the TV-NewsSearch database. Individuals throughout the world may make requests for video tape loans for reference, study, classroom instruction, and research. Users pay fees for tape loans to cover the costs of providing this service. Computers on campus will also display streaming video from CNN broadcasts using RealOne.
