2. What is Cited Reference Searching? • Allows you to search for articles that have cited a specific published work • Allows you to search the cited references (bibliography) of an article of interest • Snowballing?!

Significance of cited reference searching • Finding current research based on earlier research • Finding how many times and where a publication is cited • Identifying who is referencing a paper • How is a research topic being used to support other research • Impact of literature on other research in the field • Keeping track of your own research • Used for tenure
4. Significance of cited reference searching • Allows you to navigate forward and backward in time, discovering relationships between published works – Find new, unknown information based on older, known information – Find relevant articles in areas where there is not a large amount of literature • Find “hidden connections” between research papers • Trace the historical path of a research idea or discovery Source: ISI Thomson.
