Taking Stock: MLibrary Professional Development, Training, and Education

This Forum meeting, presented as part of the year-long Librarians' Forum series "Librarianship: Current and Future Trends in Education, Skills, and Competencies", will focus on current professional development and training opportunities at the University Library. We will hear from colleagues involved in current initiatives and will also invite attendees to share information about additional programs, then open the floor for discussion about current opportunities in general and future needs.

Featured presenters and topics are the following:

  • Faculty Exploratory – Laurie Sutch
  • Instructor College – Patricia Yocum
  • Training and Documentation Group – Julie Weatherbee
  • Library 2.0 Series – Dave Carter
  • Library Human Resources, Staff Development – Lucy Cohen

Planning ahead, we will continue the theme in a brainstorming session at the November Librarians' Forum meeting. We'll start by identifying and discussing the ideal or expected skills and competencies of librarians and examine the communication, development, training, and education needs of librarians across library divisions, including Technical Services, Information Technology, Public Services, and Scholarly Research.

Exploring Issues and Trends in Libraries/Librarianship: Identifying Competency, Professional Development, and Training Needs

Please plan to join us at this week's Librarians' Forum. In what promises to be a thought-provoking, engaging brainstorming session led by Forum Board Members Kathleen Folger and Martin Knott, we'll be exploring issues and trends influencing libraries and identifying the ideal or expected skills and competencies needed for the future. We'll be examining these professional development, training, and education needs for library roles across library divisions, including Technical Services, Information Technology, Public Services, and Scholarly Resources.

In anticipation of the meeting, some questions to consider: "How are libraries/librarianship roles changing and will the library of the future be more similar or more different?" "Are the competencies needed for public, digital, technical, and scholarly research services the same or different?" "What are the implications for skill development and training?" "Are existing professional development opportunities sufficient? "Do we need more, different, better, other options?"

This session is presented as part of the year-long Librarians' Forum series, "Librarianship, Now and in the Future: Education, Skills, and Competencies." Look for additional programs designed to address this current and important issue in our evolving profession.

Librarianship in the 21st Century: A Report on the 2007 LIS SummitJudy Olson

In preparation for a review of the LIS curriculum, the School of Information hosted a two day workshop, called the LIS Summit, on what it means to be a library or librarian in the near future. Ten key figures in the field and in fields nearby were invited to campus, and along with SI faculty, talked about what the future will bring, what research topics are important given that future, and what SI should offer future librarians in the curriculum. Associate Dean Olson will present the findings and open a discussion about how those ideas fit librarianship at Michigan.

SkillShare: Reflections and Discussion

Join us for the reporting out session of the SkillShare @ MLibrary pilot program. Representatives from the five partnerships will talk about their experiences and we will encourage questions, comments and reflections from the audience to help generate discussion.

  • Has SkillShare had any impact on staff who are not actively participating?
  • What are the incentives and disincentives of posting to the blog?
  • Did SkillShare blog posts spark conversations in your department?
  • Do you have suggestions how we might engage more library staff in the process?

If you have a chance before the meeting, take a look at the blog posts by the SkillShare participants. The blog has been described as informative, provocative, fascinating and inspirational.
